March 22, 1956 — John Treacy Masterson of Walnut Grove was killed accidentally Sunday in Phoenix, AZ, and autopsy performed early this week failed to determine reported peculiar circumstances surrounding his death. The body was shipped by plane to Kansas City and then by train to Walnut Grove. Masterson, 27, was the son of Thomas Masterson of Walnut Grove, and it was reported he was attending the university in Arizona. Owen (Casey) Masterson flew to Phoenix early in the week to make arrangements for returning the body.

March 24, 1966 — Renee Von Bokern, St. Mary’s eighth-grader, won the Lyon County spelling contest last Friday at the local parochial schools with eight fellow students competing. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. Von Bokern. Judges were Dean Mortland, Sister Martel and Mrs. Lester Henkel. Miss Maureen Fitzgerald was the pronouncer.
March 18, 1976 — A total of 42 new telephones were installed by the Tracy exchange of Northwestern Bell Telephone Co., bringing the year-end total to 1,591 phones, according to Tracy Manager John Cambronne. “We anticipate this growth to continue during 1976,” Cambronne said. On a statewide basis, the company invested $157.5 million during 1975 to provide for present and future telephone needs of its more than one million customers.

March 26, 1986 — Balaton’s board of education has eliminated boys’ and girls’ track for 1986-1987 and is interested in discussing the possibility of pairing with Milroy-Tracy, according to a memo read to the Tracy board last week. In addition, the memo from Supt. LeRoy Domagala indicated that sharing of certain services and more athletics for 1987-1988 as well as for some academic electives should be part of the discussion. The board told Supt. Harold Remme to give an immediate positive response for the request and appointed Elaine Holland and Dan Snobl to serve with Remme on the discussion subcommittee. Meanwhile, the other board subcommittee comprised of Remme and board members Dennis Fultz and Joe Cooreman are putting the final touches on the athletic pairing agreement with Milroy and are talking about academics or electives with the group.

March 20, 1996 — Currie will join the ranks of numerous towns, cities and counties being nominated for a Trail Town USA award. The American Hiking Society has introduced this program as a new feature of the Nation Trails Day program by kicking off a nationwide search for nominations. Lake Shetek State Park, in cooperation with the Murray County Economic Development Department, has nominated Currie for this honor. The nomination has been supported by letters from the Murray County Board of Commissioners and the Slayton Driftbreakers Snowmobile Club. End-O-Line Railroad Park and Museum and Currie Town and Country assisted in the preparations of the nomination.

March 22, 2006 — Tracy’s three teams were among 45 teams participating in the regional knowledge bowl event. Placing fourth was the team of Jeremiah Martin, Kyle Fraser, David French, and Will Johnston. The 17th place team consisted of Pat Van Nevel, Kraig Van Keulen, and Logan Sanow. Both teams will participate in regionals on April 3. A third TAHS team, whose members were Brittnee Michaels, Trent Edwards, Jon Mason, and Spencer Anderson, placed 32nd.
March 23, 2016 — Two well-known Tracy Area High School teachers won’t be on the school faculty when school resumes next fall. The resignations of band instructor Chris Miller and social studies/history teacher Derek Flann were accepted by the Tracy school board Monday night. Flann, who has been a teacher and coach at TAHS since the fall of 2004, has resigned, effective at the end of the school year, to accept a position with BOLD High School in Olivia. Miller, who is in his 22nd year at TAHS, plans to retire from teaching. Miller joined the TAHS faculty in the summer of 1994, just in time to prepare the Panther marching band for the Tracy Box Car Days Parade.
