When cabin fever sets in

What do you get when you cross cabin fever with workaholism? Me. And it wasn’t pretty, Before Monday evening, the last time I had been in my office was last Saturday. That was a perfect day for me. I had three things to cover, and while working on a weekend might not fly for you, it’s right up my alley.

I don’t like sitting around. I get bored way too easy, and when I’m not working, I have this horrible feeling that life/work is passing me by and I’m missing out. This is why I don’t take vacations — not to be a martyr, but because my job is 24/7, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Anyway, back to this past weekend. As much as I tried to sell the fact that we wouldn’t get more than a couple inches of nice, fluffy snow this last storm, deep down I knew better. I knew I’d get stuck at home. I knew hunkering down was in my future.

So Tara brought me my provisions — Totinos Party Pizzas, bologna, Funyuns and some bread. Yes, that’s about all I needed as far as sustenance. Pretty lame, huh? Hunkering down for me is simple. I need the aforementioned, along with my laptop and my dogs. That’s it.

As far as my laptop, I honestly didn’t touch the thing until Monday morning. Sunday, as Lionel Ritchie sang, was easy, as in I did nothing. I didn’t waste my time watching movies though. I wasted my time binging Breaking Bad on Netflix … for the third time in the last five years. Hey, it’s good stuff.

Sure, I planned on doing a little writing to address my workaholism, but that’s no easy task when one is lacking motivation.

Sunday was not my greatest moment, for sure. I knew I had to do some writing, but with Walter White and Jesse Pinkman just waiting for me, I couldn’t bring myself to working. Ironic, I know, but there was a part of me that knew I would be trapped pretty much most of the day Monday, too, so work could wait. Plus, my Play Station was calling my name, so I played few games of hockey, too.

My lazy couch time lasted until Monday morning when I broke the old laptop out and started to write. This column for starters, then a story for this week’s page one. Working on those two things took care of my boredom issue and my workaholism. What it didn’t take care of is my dogs. If you don’t think dogs can get bored, I’m here to tell you, they do.

Monday was the worst. Yes, I let them out to do their business from time to time, but with as cold as it was Monday, they were in most of the time. And they were not happy about it. Plus, there’s only so much room on the couch. And they both love the couch. At one point, my golden retriever, Moose, was lying on the couch next to me while Soup was sitting on the floor, glaring at the sliver of room next to Moose. Moose wasn’t budging, and Soup just sat there.

This is why everyone should have a dog. I can’t imagine getting stuck in my house for a day-plus with just my cat. One of us wouldn’t have made it out alive.

Eventually, our driveway was unplugged and I ventured back to my home away from home at 207 4th St.
