Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

April 12, 1956 — S-Sgt. Victor Cyr left Tuesday from Montevideo for Seattle, Wash., where he will embark for 18 months’ assignment with Military forces in Korea. Cyr just completed a 30-day leave here with his family. He is a regular army man with about 10 years’ service.

April 14, 1966 — The C&NW railroad experienced the second derailment in two weeks when five loaded grain cars of a 42-car freight train went off the track three and one-half miles west of Milroy Tuesday evening. A week ago Saturday, April 2, 16 cars of a C&NW freight left the track on the branch line between Tyler and Arco. Service there has since been restored. The late Tuesday afternoon derailment occurred about a half mile west of the crossing on County Road 11, 14 miles north of Tracy near the Melvin Miller farm. It was believed that a broken rail caused the mishap. Five grain-loaded box cars went off the track with several on their side, but none spilled open.

April 8, 1976 — In a dramatic 4-3 decision and despite objections from Currie residents, the Tracy School Board voted Tuesday night to close the Currie Elementary School at the end of present school term. The action came after more discussion between board members and 30-40 persons from Currie appearing is support of keeping the 31-student school open. Member John Malone introduced a motion to keep the school open, and it was seconded by member Connie Roemer. After more discussion, the vote came with Malone, Roemer and Sander Ludeman voting in favor of the motion, and members Pat Nelson, Bill Woodruff and Elaine Holland voting against keeping the school open.

April 16, 1986 — An open house is planned at Wee World Pre-School Wednesday and Thursday this week from 9 to 11 a.m. and; 6-8 p.m. both days. Coffee, punch and cookies will be served by staff and board members. The public is invited. WeeWorld conducts sessions three mornings a week. Four and five-year-olds meet Tuesday and Thursday morning. A group of three-year-olds meet Wednesday mornings. Children are exposed to a variety of learning concepts, including sounds, letters, names, the calendar and the environment. Support for WeeWorld comes from tuition and a variety of service clubs and organizations and drives, including the Tracy United Fund.

April 15, 1996 — Currie’s Mill Street Mercantile is opening for business on Monday. The opening is a long anticipated hope for the CARE volunteers from the Currie area. The town had been without a grocery store since December the previous year. It was decided that if $75,000 could be raised by Labor Day weekend, the construction would begin — $85,000 in pledges had been made by the deadline. The Mercantile will open after countless hours of restoration of the 19th century building.

April 12, 2006 — Maria Schmidt was one of 11 Tracy soloists to win superior ratings at the solo and ensemble contest in Cottonwood. The others are: Stacy LaVoy, Mai Xiong Vue, Allison Rasmussen, Christy Her, Jessica Mason, Emily Gilmore, Celia Brockway, Mai Zao Vue, Ben VanMoer, Jacob Gilmore. Superior vocal ensembles were: Duet— Carly and Casie Miller, Trio— Allison Rasmussen, Celia Brockway, Maria Schmidt. Women’s ensemble—Melissa Noerenberg, Karly Ruppert, Ka Lia Thao, Nicole Marks, Carly Miller, Zer Moua. Quartet—Jacob Gilmore, Dan Dieter, Ben VanMoer, Adam Baumann. Chamber Choir—Casie Miller, Mai Vue Moua, Celia Brockway, Dan Dieter, Emily Gilmore, Jacob Gilmore, Allison Rasmussen, Maria Schmidt, Ben VanMoer, Va Xiong, Mai Zao Vue, Sam VanNevel. Women’s Show Choir—Emily Gilmore, Stacy LaVoy, Jessica Mason, Allison Rasmussen, Christy Her, Mai Xiong Vue, Celia Brockway, Megan Landa, Brittnee Michael, Mai Vue Moua, Maria Schmidt, Rachel Stobb.

April 13, 2016 — Two Tracy Area High School music entries earned perfect scores at the Section 3A small group and solo music contest last week. Charlie Vang received 40 out of 40 possible points for his tuba solo, “Air and Bouree.” A vocal duet by Nathanael Przybilla and Noah Tiegs similarly got a perfect score for their singing of “Scarborough Fair.”
