Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

April 19, 1956 — Tracy high school cinderman got their first outdoor practice at the athletic field last week. Varsity Coach Jim Kotchevar and junior “high Coach Leon Moat reported that nearly 50 boys turned out for junior and senior high track and six lettermen are back. Lettermen arc David Thraen and James McCormick in the distance races; Al Pool, Gerald Monge and Curt Jette in the field events; and Jim Prouty in the 440 yard dash.

April 21, 1966 — Weather hampered Tracy high school’s track squad during the past week but Coach John Garrett’s thinclads managed to whip two opponents in a triangular meet last week. Tracy took 11 of a possible 15 first place slots. First place winners for Tracy included Ken Bicek’s three firsts in the high hurdles, low hurdles, and broad jump; Doug Robbins got two firsts in the 100 and 220 dashes; Paul Buchholz a first in the mile; Marv Kurtz a first in the 880 yard run; and Gary Otto a first in the 440 yard run.

April 15, 1976 — Walnut Grove High School opened its tennis season with a 4-1 loss to New Ulm on Monday, then went to Slayton on Tuesday to beat the Wildcats 3-2. The Loggers, coached by Greg Gemar, won just one singles match, Jim Hoyt over Rich Eads, 6-4. and 7-6, but wrapped up the doubles competition. Joe Herder and Tim Grefe topped Alan Peterson and Drew Siewert, 6-4 and 7-5, then Hope Anderson and Dale Pacholl beat John Swart and Bill Ellifson 7-6 and 6-1. In Monday’s season opener at Walnut Grove. Errol Steffen of the Loggers’ was the only winner.

April 23, 1986 — The Tracy girls track team got a record-setting performance from sophomore Ramona Schreier as well as three first place finishes by junior Julie West as the Scrappers placed second in the Tracy Invitational held Thursday at the Tracy High School track and field complex. Schreier’s record-breaking effort came in her specialty, the shot put. Schreier, with a performance of 35’9-1/4”, broke the school record of 34’2”, which Michelle Swenhaugen had set back in 1976. Schreier’s toss was good enough for a first place finish.

April 17, 1996 — Students turned out in force last week to express support for improved weightroom facilities at Tracy Area High School. More than two-dozen students were present at a Tracy school board meeting last Tuesday. No action was taken, but the proposal is expected to be discussed again when the board meets next week. The proposal calls for $10,650 worth of new weight-training equipment and mats. In addition, an estimated $5,000 would be spent expanding the existing weight room to 910 square feet. A 70xl3 foot training facility would be created by removing a wall on the south side of the present weight-training area, utilizing a hallway-storage area connected to the gym.

April 19, 2006 — The Panther girls’ softball team lost to Murray County Central 10-5 at Slayton Tuesday. The loss dropped Tracy/Milroy/Balaton’s season record to 2-3 while the Rebels improved to 4-2. Ashlei Carpenter went all the way on the mound for TMB and gave up 10 runs on 7 hits as the team committed 6 errors. Alyssa Kirk led the Panther 10 hit attack with 3 for 5 day at the plate.

April 20, 2016 — The Panther track team had a good day —individually and collectively — at the Pipestone Invitational Saturday. Kendra Ludeman won three individual events and anchored a thirdplace 4x400 meter relay team to be named the Most Valuable female athlete of the event. The TMB junior won the 200 meter, 400 meter, and high jump events. Senior Josh Kirk, who topped the long jump and won the 100 meters in his first meet of the season, led the boys.
