Remember When

April 19, 1956 — New officers for next year were elected by the Earle Ray American Legion post at a meeting last Monday night. Elected were Charles B. Marks, commander; Bud Strand, first vice; Dr. D. J. Blesner, second vice; Wendell Anderson, financial officer and Roy Spitzer and Bob .Velta, executive committee.

April 21, 1966 — Another CN&W freight train — this one on the switch run from Tracy through Marshall to Vesta — derailed. It happened west of Milroy on Tuesday night, just a short distance from where the derailment occurred last week. Five corn-filled cars went off the tracks just over 3 miles from Milroy, and about 400 feet of track were torn up. The train crew was the same involved in a wreck a week ago, and no one was injured.

April 15, 1976 — Two 22-year-old men were arrested this past week by the FBI in connection with the Dec. 31 robbery of $1,080 from the Currie State Bank in Currie. Gary Dehmlow, 22, of Jackson but who was residing in Worthington was arrested last Wednesday and Charles V. Johnson, 22, Worthington was arrested Monday. Federal bank robbery charges are pending against the two men. Further arrests may be made as the investigation.

April 23, 1986 — Clinton J. Peterson, 55, instrumental music instructor and band director at Tracy high school since 1960, will retire effective June 1, 1986. Peterson came to Tracy after 4’/2 years at Kenyon. He is a graduate of Augsburg College. Peterson replaced Jerome Rood and continued a program that featured “Christmas Preludes” and “Portraits in Melody” concerts but also added a Pops Concert, flag and rifle squad, a John Phillip Sousa award for students, an annual trip to Augustana College homecoming, and a band boosters award for adults who contributed to the band program.

April 17, 1996 — A physical therapist will begin seeing patients at Tracy Municipal Hospital July. Tom Quinlivan, Tracy hospital administrator, said he has received a commitment from a physical therapy student now completing his training at the University of Osteopathic Medicine and Health Sciences in Des Moines, Iowa. He is expected to begin working for the hospital on July 1. David D. Doyea is scheduled to receive his Master of Science degree in physical therapy May 3l, 1996.

April 19, 2006 — One of Tracy’s longest-established family businesses is welcoming a new generation. Maria Schleppenbach-Grogan is joining John’s Drug as a partner and pharmacist. Her father, John, who established the downtown landmark in 1966, is “semi-retiring.” “I’m going to keep going,” the elder Schleppenbach said. “I love coming down here too much to stop. But I am going to be taking more time off.” Maria, who earned her doctorate pharmacy degree in 1999, is buying the business and will be taking over as the store’s main druggist. “I like it here, and I like Tracy,” said Schleppenbach-Grogan. “It’s always been the plan for me to come back and run the store.”

April 20, 2016 — The hits keep on coming for Tracy native Dennis Morgan. The Gospel song “You Asked Him To Leave,” recorded by the father-son duo of Wilburn & Wilburn, has been No. 1 on the Singing News singles chart for the past month. “We hope it will stay (No. 1) a few weeks longer,” says Morgan. “Wouldn’t that be nice?”

Morgan co-wrote the song with Gerald Crabb. The heartstring-tugging song, with a gently soulful beat, wrestles with the issues of evil in an increasingly secular society.

OFFICERS OF THE NEWLY-CHARTERED CURRIE JAYCEE CHAPTER accepted a scrapbook from the Tracy Jaycees at their charter banquet in 1976 in Currie. Former Currie resident Curt Reiter was Master of Ceremonies for the banquet while Floyd Donahue, city mayor, offered the council’s assistance in any worthwhile projects. Bill Cole, past regional director from IVlarshall was the principal speaker, directing his comments to the goals of Jaycees and how they could best give service to themselves and their community. Above are Chris Kamrud, state district vice-president, Rich Andert, treasurer; Ken BurmeisterjTracy president; Gary Ruppert, president; Jim Jens, vice president, George Landuyt, Jr., Walnut Grove president, A.J. Larson, external vice president; and Jim Gervais, secretary. The Walnut Grove Jaycees, headed by president George Landuyt, sponsored the extension of the Currie chapter and its organization.
