On April 25, 2026, US Army Vietnam Veteran, Wayne Carter, was presented with a Quilt of Valor at the American Legion Post 322 Currie.
The quilt is given in honor, appreciation and thanks for the veteran’s service; and to bring comfort, peace and healing to the veteran.
Wayne began his military service in January 1959, completing basic training at Ft. Benning, GA. Following training he was deployed to Germany, and was stationed in Cold War West Germany, 3rd Infantry Division, Headquarters Company (one of America’s frontline Cold War units). There he participated in NATO field exercises, trained for rapid mobilization against a potential Warsaw Pact Invasion, and maintained a constant readiness posture. Wayne was honorably discharged from active duty at rank of E-3 in December 1960. He served an additional two years in the reserves. He received the Good Conduct Medal.
Dennis Johnson welcomed family and friends, and shared information about Wayne and his service.
Kerry Cassens and Jill Defries from Patriotic Piecers, Quilts of Valor group from Pipestone, presented Wayne with his quilt, welcome him home, and thank him for his service. Kerry then spoke briefly about the Quilts of Valor Foundation.
Quilts of Valor Foundation (QOVF), was established in 2003 by Catherine Roberts to “cover Service Members and living Veterans with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor.” Since 2003 more than 442,000 quilts have been created and presented to American veterans and active military service members.
