Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

May 3, 1956 — Tracy will be host to the regional music contest for large groups this Saturday, May 4. The regional contest for small groups will be tomorrow (Friday) in Worthington. Participants at both the contests will include winners of “A”’ ratings in district competition. Tracy’s representation at the local contest will include the band, mixed chorus, girls’ chorus and boys’ glee club. In addition, 12 bands, nine mixed choruses, ten girls’ glee clubs and six boys’ glee clubs from region two and three schools will compete. Towns represented here will include Lake Benton, Storden, Cottonwood, Brewster, Fulda, Lakefield, Windom, Jeffers, Echo, Belview, Edgerton, Ellsworth, Hills, Hendricks and Heron Lake.

May 5, 1966 — Jerry Kindall, formerly with the Twins and now with the University of Minnesota athletic department, discussed his baseball career, life at the U and athletic requirements at the athletic banquet in Walnut Grove Tuesday night. Jerry Anderson was named most valuable football player for the year; Russ Severson and Tom Masterson, football co-captains for next year, and Masterson basketball captain of the Loggers next year. For entertainment, Chuck Dibble played a tuba solo, and a group of nine Tracy Barbershoppers composed of mostly members of the Tracytones and Chromatics quartets sang several numbers.

April 29, 1976 — Tim Lovejoy of Mason City, Iowa, a brother of well-known Balaton artist Jim Lovejoy, has opened a new Gift Shop in Walnut Grove. The new business opened Monday in the former Walt’s Barber Shop building in downtown Walnut Grove. Lovejoy previously operated a similar shop in Mason City. Lovejoy said the shop will feature “exceptional variations of handcrafted works,” including homemade candies, etchings, sketches, paintings, carvings and handsculptured three-dimensional works of art.

May 7, 1986 — Tracy’s State FFA farmers this year are: Brad Frisvold, David Christian, Jim Eischens, Paul Drackley, Mark Hedge, Rick Selhnan and John Edwards. The proficiency awards were won by Rick Sellman, John Edwards and Brian Hicks. Their advisor is Jere Rambow.

May 1, 1996 — Graders, bulldozers and dump trucks have turned Pine Street into a construction zone. Heavy equipment moved in Monday along the one-mile stretch of road that runs past Tracy Elementary and Tracy High School. The Lyon County project will expand the 26foot wide roadway to 40 feet. The completed Pine Street (also known as Lyon County Highway 14) will have 12-foot driving lanes and eight-foot paved shoulders on both sides. New culverts will be installed along the road. “There are no plans to close Pine Street to traffic at this time,” said Steve Johnson, Lyon County Assistant Highway Engineer. Also planned this summer is the improvement of Lyon County Highway 29 (South Center Street), between South Street and Schaefer’s Comer.

May 3, 2006 — Idleness” and “failure” are two adjectives that aren’t in Celia Brockway’s lexicon. The Tracy Area High School junior added another achievement to her resume by being named to the Minnesota Music Educators’ All-State Choir last week. Just a week earlier, the diminutive blond earned a runner-up medallion in the state speech meet with dramatic duo partner Brad Lanoue. “I’m really excited about this,” Brockway said of her all-state choir selection. “It is really going to be fun.” Brockway is the first TAHS student in more than 20 years to qualify for all-state choir. Emily Baumann was an alternate two years ago. “This is a great honor,” said Shirlee Gilmore, TAHS vocal instructor.
