Panthers 1-2 at Wabasso tournament

Panthers 1-2 at Wabasso tournament

The Panther softball team went 1-2 in a tournament in Wabasso on Saturday.

TMB opened the day with a 16-7 loss to Wabasso.

TMB started strong with a two-run first inning, thanks to a two-run double by Bella Martinez. But the good times didn’t last long, as the Rabbits plated nine runs in their half of the first, with four hits, including a grand slam.

But the Panthers weren’t done, and they pushed across five more runs with a homer of their own — a three-run shot by Gretchen Lanoue that brought them to within two runs at 9-7.

“Our offense was good this game, but other areas were not,”coach Karl Campbell said.

The Rabbits weren’t done either, though, as they scored another three runs in the second.

Avery Torgeson doubled and scored a run, and Melaina Ankrum and Alli Dolan both scored twice.

Game 2 was no picnic for the Panthers, either. TMB tied it at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, but that was it for the Panther offense. BOLD, on the other hand, was just getting started, and the Warriors took a 7-1 lead in the third, then tacked on 11 runs in the fourth for the 18-1 win.

“The game with BOLD was a disaster,”Campbell said. “They hit the ball well and we did not. The box score indicates only errors but we made a lot of mistakes that don’t show up in the box score.”

Braelynn Kirk scored TMB’s lone run, and Dolan had its only hit of the game. Aliyah Loftness was the only other baserunner — she walked in the fourth and final inning.

TMB ended the day on a high note with a 10-9 win over LQPV. TMB once again scored a first-inning run when Ankrum singled in Kirk; Ankrum also scored for an early 2-0 lead.

The Panthers scored another trio of runs in the third on an RBI double by Dolan and a two-run base hit from Martinez for a 5-2 lead. However, the Warriors weren’t done. BOLD scored five runs in the fifth to grab a 7-6 advantage. TMB tied it in the sixth on a run-scoring single by Dolan that scored Ankrum (one of her four runs scored), but BOLD grabbed an 8-7 lead with a run in the seventh.

In the eighth, Piper Freeburg scored, and the game would go on to the eight inning where TMB won it on a base hit by Loftness that scored Dolan for the winning run.

“We had several players with multiple hits, and played fairly well on defense,” Campbell said. “We just needed to clean up some base running things, or mistakes that shouldn’t be happening this late in the season.”

Loftness went 3-for-4 against BOLD.

MAY 8: YME 15, 7 / TMB 4, 3

The Panthers were swept by Yellow Medicine East last Friday, losing 15-4 and 7-3.

For the Sting, it was their sixth and seventh straight wins, as they kept pace with Minneota/Canby in the Camden Conference.

YME opened the doubleheader with four runs in the top of the first in Game 1. TMB countered with two runs of its own thanks to a two-run homer by Melaina Ankrum that scored Braelynn Kirk, who led off the bottom of the first with a double.

However, YME put its foot down in the fourth with eight runs. Ankrum also tripled for TMB and scored twice. Gretchen Lanoue and Aliyah Loftness both doubled for the Panthers, who were able to score twice in the fifth on Lanoue’s double.

Things started much better in the nightcap for TMB (8-8, 5-5), as the Panthers got on the board first with two runs in the first inning. Lanoue doubled in Ankrum, and Alli Dolan scored on a groundout by Loftness.
