Irish fall to Rockets, down Pipestone

The Irish opened the season with a 6-1 loss to the tough Raymond Rockets last Friday, then bounced back with a 14-5 victory over Pipestone this past Sunday.

Against Raymond, the Irish kept it close through six innings before the Rockets opened things up with a four consecutive doubles in the eighth that resulted in four runs.

Derek Smith went 2-for-4 and Tyler Peterson drove in Milroy’s lone only run.

On the mound, Craig Lasley stymied the Rockets for five innings, limiting them to five hits and striking out three.

“Craig pitched very well for us, giving us five strong inning while only allowing two runs versus that lineup,” said Dolan.

In the win over Pipestone, Derek Smith was 4-for-5 with two doubles, and Peterson collected another three RBI on three hits. Trevor Smith and Tyler Maeyaert also both had three hits.

“I really like our approach being aggressive on pitches in the zone,” Dolan said. “Everybody was hitting the ball.”

Trevor Smith gave up five runs in four innings and got a nodecision. Maeyaert struck out six of the seven batters he faced in two innings of relief to pick up the win, and Peterson and Derek Smith cleaned things up at the end.

The Irish are at Granite Falls on Friday and return home to face Luverne at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
