Sports Flashbacks

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

May 19, 1966 — Ken Bicek paced Tracy’s track team to a good showing in the tough Trojan Relays at Worthington last week. Bicek emerged as the only double winner in the meet with firsts in the high hurdles and broad jump. He got a second in the low hurdles. Terry Sturges, a freshman, copped first in the 70-yard dash.

May 17, 1956 — Although Al Pool and Jim McCormick got first places and set new meet records, Tracy settled for fifth place in the Nine Star Conference track meet at Windom Monday.

May 13, 1976 — Reed Johnson and Joel Daniels cracked a pair of hits each as Tracy High School held on for a 9-4 win over Cottonwood Monday afternoon here at Legion Field. Tracy scored eight quick runs in the first two innings and pitcher Tom Lenzen held Cottonwood scoreless until the fifth inning.

May 21, 1986 — The Scrappers got championship performances from Julie West, who won both the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter intermediate hurdles, Ramona Schreier, who was victorious in the shot put, and Teresa Morin, who sprinted to the tape first in the 100 meter dash, as they won the Southern Sioux Conference title.

May 15, 1996 — The Panther girls’ 4X800 relay team of Kari Vickennan, Leah Gifford, Julie Gifford, and Daisy Schmidt bested their school record set last week at the Trojan Relays with a time of 9:54.27 at a meet in Slayton. The team employed a different strategy, with Vickerman leading off the race, instead of running third, followed by the Gifford sisters and Schmidt. Each runner responded with their best split time of the season. A second school record was set by Schmidt in winning the open 800 meters. Her time of 2.25.22 topped a mark of 2:26.7 set by Shannon (Bolin) Hook in 1981.

May 17, 2006 — The Panther baseball team won a conference game over Dawson-Boyd 10-0 Monday at Milroy in a 6 inning game shortened by the 10-run rule. The win improved Tracy/Milroy/ Balaton’s season record to 13-5 and they are 8-2 in the Camden Conference. David Schmidt led the 10 hit Panther attack with 3 hits, 2 runs batted in and 2 stolen bases.

May 18, 2016 — Tracy-Milroy-Balaton beat Southwest Christian 10-2 for their second win of the season Monday. Tanner Deming-Phelps was 2-4 with 3 RBI and a double. Brady Lanoue was on base four times with two hits and two walks and scored two runs.
