Sports Flashbacks

May 24, 1956 — Tracy will have four entries in the Region track meet as the result of distrct competition at Marshall Friday. Dick Kampmeyer, first in the mile; Jim Prouty, first in the 440, Jim McCormick, first in the 880; and Al Pool, second in the discus all qualified for the region meet.

May 26, 1966 — Coach John Garrett’s Tracy high school track squad will be a strong contender for the District Nine track title at Marshall. At Montevideo leading up districts, At Monte, Ken Bicek set a new meet record in the broad jump with a leap of 20-23/4. In addition to Bicek, the Scrappers must count on runners like Doug Robbins, Garry Hippe, Marv Kurtz, Terry and Jerry Sturges, Mark Garrett, Dave Hollingswort, and Gary Otto.

May 20, 1976 — Back-to-back homers in the ninth lifted Canny to a 7-6 win over the Enginners in the Southwest Minny League opener Sunday at Canby. Tracy had grabbed a 6-5 lead in their half of the ninth inning on a home run by Gale Otto, but then Greg DeVos and Greg Hruby pleased hometown fans with their big home runs to win the game.

May 28, 1986 — One point. That was the difference Saturday afternoon at the Southwest State University track. As it was, the Tracy Scrapper girls track team fell that one point short in its quest to defend its District 9 title. Instead, Russell-Tyler captured the crown with 89% points. The Scrappers brought home four gold medals, including two by Julie West. Sophomore Ramona Schreier won Tracy’s other individual championship.

May 22, 1996 — The Panther girls’ track team easily won the 212 Conference track title at Olivia. One of the Panthers’ seven victories came in the 3200 meters from eighth-grader Julie Gifford. The diminutive Gifford wowed the crowd, by beating BOLD’s Nicole Kuznia, the defending Class A state champion in both the 3200 and 1600 meters. The race marked the first time in two years Kuznia had lost in the 3200 meters.

May 24, 2006 — The Panther baseball team won the Camden Conference Championship with an 8-6 win over KMS in 8 innings at Kerkhoven. Matt Bauer started on the mound for TMB and pitched 4 1/3 innings giving up 5 runs while striking out 7 walking 4 and hitting 3 hitters. Derek Daniels came on in relief and got the win by pitching 3 2/3 innings and allowing only 1 run. Paul Carlson led the 9 hit Panther attack with a 3 for 4 day at the plate while Matt Bauer was 2 for 5.

May 25, 2016 — Kendra Ludeman, Gabbie Gervais, Josh Kirk, and Spencer Smith were individual winners in the Camden Conference track & field meet Thursday at Lac qui Parle High School. Ludeman won the long jump and high jump, Gervais topped the shot put, Kirk won the 100 meters, and Smith captured the high jump.
