Konnor Zick and Carson Javers hit back-to-back singles in a two-run seventh inning to lift the Milroy Irish to a well-played 3-2 win over the Luverne Redbirds on Sunday at Irish Yard.
Those were two of the five total hits for the Irish. However, it was enough for Irish starter Trevor Smith, who scattered 11 hits. He struck out seven Redbirds.
Tyler Maeyaert pitched a perfect eighth and ninth, striking out four while hitting 90 mph on the radar gun.
First and foremost, Luverne’s 1-9 batters is a college lineup — very, very good hitters to say the least,” Irish manager Anthony Dolan said. “Trevor did a phenomenal job scattering their hits and not allowing them to string together too much, limiting their scoring.”
Derek Smith had a pair of hits for Milroy. “All in all, I was happy with our resolve and we never hung our heads,” Dolan said. “We continued to put together great atbats and proved to be tough outs for them. We only struck out seven times compared to their 11 strikeouts. I was very happy with our approach at the plate.”
