Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers May 24, 1956 A vocal quartette of Tracy high school girls made an unprecedented sweep of honors at the Kiwanis “Search for Stars” talent contest Tuesday night. The quartette, consisting of Sandra Allumbaugh, Connie Silver, Kathy Johnson and Carol Hyllested and accompanied by Miss Donna Niebuhr, sang the currently popular ballad, “Eddie My Love.” They won a $25 bond donated by Farmers and Merchants bank through the vote of the audience. They won $25 first prize money when the applause meter registered highest for them. And a judging team of outsiders, composed of Mrs. L. R. Christiansen, Minneota, Ken Baker, district kiwanis Lt. governor, and Wes James, KMHL sports announcer, picked them for a trip to Minneapolis and an appearance on WCCO-TV.

May 26, 1966 — A 25-yearold Vesta man, William J. Rohlik, was killed about 8 a. m. Sunday when he apparently lost control of his car, went off the road, tipped and came to rest in a grove of trees. The mishap occurred on county highway 5 about five-andone-half miles north of Walnut Grove. Rohlik, a bachelor, died of multiple internal injuries in the wreckage of the car. The mishap was investigated by Sheriff Vincent Bestick, and Dr. W. C. Ferguson, deputy county coroner. Funeral services for Rohlik, employed as a construction worker, were held at Seaforth yesterday. He graduated from Wabasso’s St. Ann high school in 1958, and served four years in the Navy.
