Students attend Science & Nature Conference
May 12 was crammed with science experiments, exploration, and discoveries, as students from kindergarten through eighth grade enjoyed an end-of-the-year field trip to the SWWC’s 32nd Science & Nature Conference, hosted by SMSU.
Norm Barnhart energized the audience with his “Amazing Science” demonstrations, showcasing combustion, soda geysers, physics, chemistry, and much more. He encouraged students to, “never give up,” as he attempted experiments, demonstrating persistence and resilience. Barnhart has been captivating audiences with his shows for years, performing in all 50 states and 16 different countries.
Throughout the day, students participated in breakout sessions where they built a highway, constructed bridges, made slime and gummy worms, while others dove into topics like plant fractals, animal defenses, and electricity. Other engaging subjects included health careers, rocket building and launching, zoo life, greenhouses, fossils, flower clocks, and making your very own fishing lure.
A total of 27 sessions were led by local scientists, entrepreneurs, professionals, and educators, all passionate about sharing their love for science. Over 900 participants from 20 school districts and 93 families attended
