SECTION 3A TRACK AND FIELD

The 2026 TMB track and fields season came to an end at last Thursday’s Section 3A Track and Field Meet in Pipestone.

“Sections was especially bittersweet this year,” TMB coach Heather Kamrud-Rice said. “ We had a lot of athletes qualify for sections this year, and our sub-section was particularly fast this year.”

There are multiple sub-sections in Section 3A for track and field; Kamrud-Rice said when she was planning the Panthers’ sub-section lineup, she printed a list of the top 10 competitors in every event for the section and highlighted the ones in the South sub-section to see which events were going to be the most competitive for TMB.

“It turned out that in the majority of the events our sub-section had all but three or four of the best marks,” she said. “For example, in the boys open 100 meter run, seven of the top times in the section were in our sub-section, and only the top four move on to sections, along with four wild cards in each event. All of that means it was extra tough to get to sections this year, but we brought a busload.”

Kamrud-Rice said the hard part about last week was watching the seniors’ season end, as TMB had no state qualifiers.

Tyler Arnold, Eli Lightfoot, Hunter Ostgaard, and Linaye Schreier were the seniors who qualified for sections.

“Through the years, Tyler has done almost every event, so, it’s not too surprising that he would like to try out the world of multievent competitions like the decathalon (at college). He will be an excellent decathalete. Hunter had a fantastic season; his best event was the 200-meter sprint, but he was a crucial part of our sprint relays. Hunter was injury plagued last year, so he worked hard to stay healthy and competitive.

Ostgaard’s fastest run this year was 23.89 seconds; he ran a 24.23 at sections.

Both Lightfoot and Schreier went out with a personal best in the triple jump. Lightfoot placed fourth with a 40’10” jump while dealing with a nagging quad injury that plagued him all spring.

TRISTON WHITEHORSE’S 4x800 relay team placed 13th at the Section 3A Track and Field Meet in Pipestone last Thursday.

TALON BRINKLEY placed 11th in the 110-meter hurdles at last week’s Section 3A Track and Field Meet.

LINAYE SCHREIER jumped a personal best 33’4.75 in the triple jump at sections.

OWEN BEIER (left) and Tyler Arnold were part of the boys’ 4x800-meter relay team that finished 13th at sections.

SAM LIGHTFOOT was 11th in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 39.94.

“I think with healthy legs, he had a legitimate shot at making it to state,” Kamrud-Rice said. “But Eli powered through and PRd. Linaye jumped 33’4.75” for a PR. She has been on fire, getting faster in both her running events and it helps with jumping. I think if we had two more weeks to prepare, she might have gotten the school record which is 34’0.5” set by Tessa Nelson 2003.”

Schreier ended up in fifth place in the triple jump and was

12th in the 100-meter hurdles at 18.04, right behind teammate RaeLynn Schreier, who ran a 17.95.

Of the 20 or so TMB athletes that went to sections, only four were seniors.

“I think this season really lit a fire under some of our younger athletes, and I’m excited to see them perform next year,” concluded Kamrud-Rice.
