E ach week, Per and I have to come up with a topic for our column. Many times, we are calling dibs on a topic before the other person can because we both are excited to write about it.
Other times, it’s easy to write because I have strong feelings on a topic or my kids are giving me something to write about.
This week, I started my column many times. I should say, I attempted to start my column.
I had my computer open Sunday morning before the boys were even awake. I had nothing so I switched to paper layout. Monday, I opened a document and minimized it several times throughout the day.
Tuesday night, I had my laptop in bed with me as I worked on proofing copy for our Lincoln County papers, and then my column was next on my list.
Instead, I formatted the TAHS honor roll for upcoming publication.
It isn’t that we aren’t busy or I haven’t had a million things going on that I could write about. Actually, it is the opposite.
May is an insane month in our industry. Parents often talk of the chaos of the month and their specific child’s events. We have all the events — the programs, the awards, the graduations, the “final of this” for the year. We also have our regular meetings, sports, etc. that have to be covered. Of course, this year we proved we are truly crazy and added three more publications, so we had four of everything.
I also had all the lasts for Ben as my senior. And all the last for Natalie as she finished Holy Redeemer School. And Brady finishing his second year of college.
Of course, with a senior, we’re busy getting ready to celebrate Ben. Because of all of it, May seemed to go by in a blink of an eye. Mornings have been early as we try to keep up here and evenings have been late as we run to events and finish projects.
Ben’s party is Saturday night and I am going to take two whole days off work beforehand. Now I doubt I will go two days without being interrupted, but it’s a good goal. I am going to focus on getting things done so Saturday evening I can sit back with my friends and family and enjoy.
I’d like to say that once the chaos of the week is finished, we’ll be ready for a relaxing summer. But in today’s standards, I don’t think relaxing and summer go together. Laura Ingalls Wilder Pageant practice started this week and while we may be home Saturday, we’re back on the road for a soccer tournament Sunday in Watertown, SD.
So, instead of deep thoughts or opinions, I think my brain is just a little fried. Instead of great ideas, I think I’m going to let it rest and work on something better for next week.
