Munson cards 105 on 1st day of state meet

Munson cards 105 on 1st day of state meet

The temps weren’t the only thing high on Tuesday afternoon as the Class A individual girls golf tournament got underway at Pebble Creek in Becker. The excitement and nerves were rising as quickly as the mercury level.

However, TMB golfer Taylor Munson used her experience as a repeat state participant to get those nerves under control quickly.

On the first day of the tournament, Munson shot a 104 and was tied for 64th place going into the final 18 holes Wednesday.

Munson qualified for the state tournament as a sophomore last year and felt better going into the tournament this week after having played the course before. She felt knowing the course more was an advantage to those who have qualified before.

While she is always wanting to be better, she was happy with her finish in day one and that she had completed her goal going into the state tournament.

“My goal was to beat my score from last year,” Munson said. “Last year, I shot a 107 on day one and this year I shot a 104.”

Munson started her day on the back nine, typically described as the more difficult part of the course. She was frustrated with her start but was able to turn it around as she worked through the course.

“I had a good putt for a par,” Munson said. “ I had a stretch of five holes that got me back really well. I’m happy with how I fought back.”

In addition to beating her Day 1 score from 2025, Munson also had to beat the heat throughout the 18 holes, as the girls tournament didn’t start until noon.

“It was really hot,” she said. “But the last day of sections was really hot, too. So I think that helped me mentally on this day.”

While she is coached by her father, Michael, she has plenty of family giving her pointers as she entered the second day, including older brother, and previous state participant Alex and her grandfather. She knows how lucky she is to have a family to support her and work with her to improve.

“Having a golfing family is really nice,” Munson said. “They each help me in their own way.”

Munson’s goal going into Day 2 was to keep improving her score. She shot a 95 on the second day of the 2025 state tournament. She is looking to improve on that as she teed off at 12 p.m. on Wednesday.

Day 2 of the state tournament was still in progress went this week’s Headlight Herald went to press. Munson’s final results will be published in the June 18 edition.
