Lyon County commissioners come to consensus on division of SAHA funds

Lyon County Commissioners on Tuesday determined how to spread out Statewide Affordable Housing Aid.

At the June 2 meeting, representatives from Habitat for Humanity, United Community Action Partnership and Tapestry Companies made their respective pitches for a piece of the $307,000-plus funding pie.

Commissioners voted to appropriate $150,000 to Habitat for Humanity, $50,000 to UCAP and the rest — $107,135 — to Tapestry, which plans on building a 42unit, low-income apartment complex in Marshall.

Board Chair Todd Draper was the first to share his thoughts on how the funding should be doled out.

“I like the idea that (Habitat for Humanity) is ready to go today,” Draper said. “I think it’s a good project, and it’s a revolving project.”

Draper, who sits on the UCAP board, also said it’s important to put a good amount of money in their coffers. He said the affordable housing project offered up by Tapestry is also a good cause.

“If they do not get awarded other funding, (the SAHA) money should be looked at before the end of the year,” said Draper. “We can determine where to go with that if there is some other request.”

Commissioner Rick Anderson agreed with Draper and said if Tapestry isn’t able to move ahead with its plan, their share should go to Habitat for Humanity.

“I like the idea of being able to build a house and have a revolving loan fund,” he said. With Tapestry, we may have that money to spend again later. I really want to get that 150 (thousand) into Habitat for Humanity’s hands. I think there’s enough communities throughout the county that would love to see some of these houses built; it wouldn’t be specific to the city of Marshall.”

Commissioners Tom Andries and Gary Crowley also agreed with how Draper split the funding.

“It’s going to put money into the communities, create more living spaces and bring more tax dollars in,” he said. “I like the split the way it was proposed.”

Of the County’s available SAHA funds, $104,699 needs to be committed to a project by the end of 2026.
