“Name that Year” is designed to put your knowledge of Tracy and its newsmakers of the past to the test. Each week, we will publish a news item that ran in a past edition — maybe it was a major event, or a story about a Tracy resident — it’s up to you to determine in what year that particular news item hit the pages of the paper:
• CLINTON J. PETERSON, 55, INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC INSTRUCTOR AND BAND DIRECTOR AT TRACY HIGH SCHOOL SINCE 1960, WILL RETIRE EFFECTIVE JUNE 1 OF THIS YEAR.
Peterson came to Tracy after 4-1/2 years at Kenyon. He is a graduate of Augsburg College. Peterson replaced Jerome Rood and continued a program that featured “Christmas Preludes” and “Portraits in Melody” concerts but also added a Pops Concert, flag and rifle squad, a John Phillip Sousa award for students, an annual trip to Augustana College homecoming, and a band boosters award for adults who contributed to the band program.
He served as president of Tracy Education Association (TEA), a band vice-president of Minnesota Music Educators Association (MMEA) and is currently completing his three-year term on the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) board of directors representing MMEA. As MMEA’s band vice-president for two years he had charge of the All-State Band program.
Peterson decided to take early retirement under the state law’s so-called Rule 85 which expires this school year. He intends to reside in Tracy and do some parttime things in the area. The board accepted his resignation at its Tuesday meeting with regret and deepest appreciation for the excellent work done for District No. 417.
