Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

July 5, 1956 — Tentative building plans for Tracy’s new armory building to be blended with the Municipal building will be submitted to officials in Washington, D. C, next week. If no red tape blocks the route, construction of the new addition will probably begin in September. Indications are that the “blended” plans will receive favorable consideration and approval. That is the word which William R. Mitchell, chairman of the local armory committee, brought back from St. Paul recently. It came from the adjutant general’s office. Major General J. E. Nelson, and from General Phil Bettenberg, commander of the 47th Viking division, who will submit plans to Washington authorities. Blended plans were drawn by Bettenberg, Townsend and Stolte, architects, along original lines proposed by civic committees and the local armory planning commission.

Obituaries: Elizabeth Glaser, Elnor Hoskins, Raymond Danielson, Morris Johnson July 5, 2006 — Interesting finds continue to turn up in an archaeological dig at the John Malone farm north of Currie. Last week, John’s brother, Neil Malone and his family made a second trip from California to continue the dig. Those who participated included Neil’s wife, Mary Nell, their daughter Allison, and Neil and John’s brother, Pat. Also assisting were cousins Allyson Arise of Sioux City, Iowa, and Amanda Zauner of Galesville, Wis. The girls had traveled to Currie for the annual Maloneathon, a gathering of the family’s children. Neil and Mary Nell timed their trip to Minnesota around the event. It was almost exactly one year ago when the dig first began. What prompted the archaeological excursion? John had dug up the site to repair a broken tile line — a routine experience for the Currie farmer. While digging, he came across a wooden corner.

July 6, 2016 — It was a grand weekend in Balaton, as the community celebrated both Independence Day and Funfest. A Saturday afternoon parade, outdoor concerts, kids’ bounce houses, athletic tournaments, tractor shows, a kiddie parade, and of course, lots of good food, were all part of the festivities.

SIGN PAINTER ERWIN MILLER of Marshall, formerly of Tracy, put the finishing touches on a new sign in 1976 on a building of the Tracy Farmers Elevator complex. Cost of the project was jointly shared by the Tracy Centennial-Bicentennial Committee and the Tracy Area Chamber of Commerce. This was approximately the eighth time that Miller has painted the sign which has usually carried just a Box Car Day theme. The sign faces the downtown area.
