If you are a regular viewer of KELO newscasts, you may have noticed a familiar surname pop up from time to time. Jaelyn Borresen is the Midday and First at 4 Meteorologist for the Sioux Falls CBS affiliate, as well as regular on the station’s Saturday weathercasts. She has a direct connection to many Tyler residents.
“My dad, Chet Borresen, grew up in Tyler and my mom, LuAnn (Spielman) Buerkle, is from Balaton,” Borresen said. “My grandparents, Jill and Paul Borresen, still live in Tyler, along with my greatgrandma and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.”
Jaelyn’s maternal grandparents are Steve and Kathy Spielman of Balaton.
Jaelyn started at KELO last year, taking the position in February of 2025, her first job in the field. She attended high school at Belle Plaine.
“I went to St. Cloud State University and graduated with a major in Meteorology and a minor in Mass Communications,” she said. “The summer before my senior year of college, I interned at KELO. At the end of my internship, I was offered the job. With the commitment of finishing my degree and my final year on the St. Cloud State Dance Team, I worked part-time from St. Cloud before moving to Sioux Falls in February to begin my fulltime role.”
Viewers can catch Jaelyn daily on newscasts.
“I also enjoy keeping viewers updated on social media through KELOLAND Weather Facebook and X pages, as well as my personal Facebook page, @Jaelyn Borresen,” she said.
Jaelyn’s interest in weather dates back to her childhood.
“Since I was young, I’ve always had a passion for weather. The more I’ve learned about it over the years, the more it has fueled my love for it!”
Her childhood memories would be similar to any Tyler native over the years.
“Some of my favorite memories in Tyler have been spending Christmas with my family there and dancing around the Christmas tree to “Nu Har Vi Jul Igen,” Æbleskiver Days, and my grandma making us æbleskivers on weekend visits.”
When not bringing weather forecasts to the region, she has plenty of ways to fill her time.
“When I’m not on-air, I love to hang out with family, travel and every once in a while...dance! I have been fortunate enough to have had some incredible experiences recently, including dancing in Netflix’s NFL Christmas Halftime Show with Snoop Dogg and at the R & B Tour with Usher and Chris Brown.”
So, the next time you see that familiar last name pop up on your screen and you think, “I wonder if…,” well, now you know.
