Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers July 19, 1956 — Merlyn Mickelson turned in a one-hit performance Friday night as Tracy’s American Legion baseball team whipped Marshall 9-0 to finish the regular season undefeated. District officials are now laying plans for the playoffs which will get underway soon, Don Buzzell, team manager announced. Tracy collected 10 hits and Mickelson had a perfect game until the seventh inning. Tracy got its first run in first inning when Dick Mickelson tripled and scored on the Marshall catcher’s error. From then on it was a close contest, although Tracy threatened on numerous occasions.
July 21, 1966 — The Tracy Pee Wees hoisted their record to 6-2 with wins over Sanborn and Walnut Grove while the Midgets lost to Walnut Grove and did not play at Sanborn. The Midgets’ record is 5-2. Curt Marben pitched a no-hitter in stopping Sanborn 4-0. Local hitters were Glen Austin with two; Tom Rignell, Spud Hayes and Marben each had one hit.
July 15, 1976 — Tracy golfer Dave Peterson has qualified for regional play in the Minnesota Golf Association MGA championship golf series. Peterson carded scores of 79 at Minneota, 70 in Tracy and 73 at Marshall in recent district competition. He will play in the regional MGA round on Friday, July 23 at Monticello. He is one of eight golfers in this area district to qualify.
July 23, 1986 — Eric Trulock, a junior at Tracy High School, placed sixth last week in a national youth wrestling tournament held at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa. Top wrestlers from 47 states competed in the National Juniors Greco-Roman Tournament. Eric said he was pleased that he had done so well—and a little bit surprised. “I didn’t think I would win more than one or two matches... It was exciting doing so well.” The Tracy wrestler competed in nine, six-minute matches. He won six of those matches, including his first four, enroute to his sixth-place finish in the 132-pound division. Eighty-five wrestlers competed in the weight class.
July 17, 1996 — Tracy advanced to the district VFW tournament at Fairfax this weekend with a 5-1 win over Bird Island at Tracy Tuesday evening. The balance of the VFW district playoffs will be double-elimination. For the balance of the game Jamie Louwagie kept the opponents well in check allowing one run. Raleigh Schmidt had a triple that scored three runs. Schmidt came home on Derrick Pinckney’s single.
July 19, 2006 — The Milroy Legion baseball team saw its season end with a 3-2 extra inning loss to Springfield in Sub-District 2 Tournament play at Milroy Friday. Milroy scored 2 runs in the fourth inning to take a 2-1 lead. However Springfield scored a run in the fifth and another in the ninth to win the game. Matt Bauer went all the way on the mound for Milroy and held Springfield to only 3 runs on 3 hits while striking out 6 and walking 6. The winning run was scored on a bunt single, a wild pitch, a passed ball and a ground out to third. Sean Castle had 2-for-4 day at the plate that included a triple, a RBI and two stolen bases. Derek Radke went 3-for-5 with 2 stolen bases.
July 20, 2016 — The Tracy Area Girls Softball 14U team finished second in the first-ever TAG/ Sanford 14U Softball Tournament in Tracy on Saturday. Tracy defeated DeRuytter Pallets (RTR) and Wabasso, and fell to Jasper in pool play. The Thunder lost to Jasper, 9-2, in the championship game. “On behalf of TAG, I would like to thank Sanford Tracy for sponsoring our first-ever girls softball tournament,” TAG Chairman Per Peterson said. “It was a great day filled with great softball — and the weather held off just long enough for us to get all our games in.” Peterson said he received numerous compliments on the tournament, as well as Tracy’s softball complex, from fans from visiting towns.
