July 19, 1956 — Special installation ceremonies for the new pastor of Trinity Lutheran church in this city are scheduled for Sunday. Rev. Robert Daw of Baltimore, MD, graduate last month of Capital university, Columbus, Ohio, is to be the new pastor of the local church and the rural Johnsonville Lutheran church near Lucan. Dr. Alfred Ewald of St. Paul, district president of the American Lutheran church, will install the pastor at the 10:45 a.m. worship service. Earlier he will be installed at the Johnsonville church. Reverend Daw is married and has a three-yearold daughter. He will live in Johnsonville. He succeeds the Rev. Edward Domke, former pastor, who now is pastor of a church at Taylor, SD.

July 21, 1966 — A public hearing on the question of closing the Amiret elementary school and bussing the 20 pupils into the Tracy public school will be held next Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. in the Amiret school. The school board at its July 12 meeting discussed the matter in view of declining enrollment and the recent resignation of one teacher. In the meantime, parents of students and preschoolers in the Amiret area have been sent questionnaires to survey opinions. It is expected that a consensus will be presented at the hearing Tuesday night. General feeling of the board is thatthe welfare of the students is the first consideration, and it is felt that they can best be served in the competitive atmosphere of the larger class sections in the Tracy elementary school.

July 15, 1976 — Approximately 30 small pigs were killed in a rather unusual incident early Wednesday morning on the John Meyer farm near Tracy. Meyer told the Headlight-Herald the incident occured sometime between 2 a.m. and when he discovered it about 7:15 a.m. An unknown animal apparently entered a hog house on the farm and attacked a group of 71 pigs in the building. Meyer, said about 20 pigs were killed outright by the animal and another 10 to 12 pigs were missing. He said heads of several pigs were torn off and others had big claw and teeth marks on them.

The council met Monday morning to approve the new plan, while the school board gave their approval at their Monday night meeting. The new arrangement significantly lessens the school district’s financial obligation to the pool, a development that school board members have long sought. Under the new agreement, the City of Tracy will be responsible for 100% of major improvement and repair expenses. Previously, the school and city had shared major expenses on a 50/50 basis. Future improvements had become a major concern to both governmental bodies. Although the pool facility is operating fine now, school and city officials have both looked ahead to the time when the pool is expected to need major, and costly overhauls or complete replacement. The pool was built in the early 1950s.

July 17, 1996 — A fundraising campaign for Tracy Municipal Hospital is onethird of the way toward reaching a $400,000 goal. Just one month after its start, contributions and pledges total $134.366. “We are excited by the progress that has been made to date.” commented Drive Chairman Harold Knudson. Money collected in the drive will be used to update the 35-yearold hospital to accommodate changing trends in the health-care industry. A top priority is to remodel the hospital’s under-utilized south wing into an outpatient service area. Also planned are improvements to the hospital’s front entrance, lobby, business office, nurses’ station, emergency-room waiting area and corridors. It is hoped that construction can begin on at least some of the improvements this fall.

July 19, 2006 — An estimated 600 people turned out for the fourth annual Shetek Area Medical Services Health Fair Saturday. Sioux Valley Tracy Area Medical Services, Murray County Medical Center and Westbrook Health Center sponsored the event, held at End-O-Line Park in Currie. “Another success – another great day and we are very pleased to see the number of people coming to the fair to better their health. We hope to see everyone back again next year,” commented Rick Nordahl, administrator for the Westbrook and Tracy health-care facilities. Over 75 vendors set up booths and displays about health information and services. Free chair massages, chiropractic consultations and free skin screenings were among the offerings. Scores of people received free and reducedcost medical tests and screenings. One of the most popular were the free skin cancer screenings from area physicians, which attracted more than 100 people.

July 20, 2016 — Tracy Area Schools broke new ground at Monday’s school board meeting. They showed that it was possible to deal with all of the issues of a 76-page agenda without turning a page in the conventional way. There were no paper pages to turn. Each board member had one of the school’s new laptop computers in front of them and rather than turning, they scrolled through all of the pages they needed to reference. Board member Sheila Holland was the only exception but that was because she had brought her own iPad to use. Supt. Chad Anderson had decided that it was time to both set a good example by using the new technology and to save many pages of paper this week and in future meetings.
