Fomer TAHS Supt. set to retire at end of current contract

The RTR School Board accepted the resignation of Superintendent David Marlette at last week’s meeting. Marlette plans to work through the end of FY26, ending in June 2027.

“This is the last year of my contract,” Marlette said. “When I get to that point, I’m going to ride off into the west on my horse.”

He joked that it would either be retirement or a divorce.

“This will be my ninth year here,” he said. “It has gone fast.”

Marlette, who served as superintendent at Tracy Area High School from 20042011, came out of a two-year retirement before taking the RTR job.

“I’ve really enjoyed it,” he said. “This has been a great ride for me. There have been a lot of battles, but we got them done. We have a beautiful building, and I think the education of our students is going in the right direction.”

Marlette said he gave his notice a year out to give the board plenty of time to find his successor.

The district will start the process of a search for a new superintendent with a target of hiring in early 2027.

Board member Alan Matzner made the motion to approve.

“I will say thank you, and I will make a motion to approve your retirement letter,” Matzner said.

Last week, Marlette released the following letter to the staff and the community: Dear Members of the RTR School Board, Staff, Students, Families, and Community!

After much reflection and with a full and grateful heart, I am writing to formally announce my retirement as Superintendent of RTR ISD No. 2902, effective June 30, 2027.

Serving as RTR Superintendent for nine years (April 2018-June 2027) has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life. RTR is a truly special district, and I am deeply thankful for the opportunity to work alongside such dedicated educators, support staff, administrators, board members, families, and community partners. Together, we have built something meaningful with always keeping students at the center of our work and striving to provide each and every one of them with the best possible educational opportunities.

I am incredibly proud of what we have accomplished during my time at RTR. From insuring financial security, upwards academic growth, strong program development, modern facilities improvements and a continued commitment to high student success; our progress has been the result of teamwork, trust, and a shared vision. The passion and professionalism of our staff, the strong support of our families, and the coming together of our three communities have made this district a place where students thrive.

I want to extend my sincere appreciation to the RTR School Board for your leadership, support, and collaboration over the years. Your dedication to the district and willingness to make thoughtful, student-focused decisions have made my role both rewarding and meaningful.
