After a lengthy discussion about a key piece of equipment for the landfill, the Lyon County Board of Commissioners pumped the brakes on a major expenditure for the facility.
Lyon County currently leases a 2019 John Deere 210G excavator for $6,000 a month. Lyon County Environmental Director Roger Schroeder told the board that he is very pleased with the excavator and that it has exceeded expectations, but threw out the option of either buying the excavator outright, purchasing a 2022 Case CX210D excavator or returning it to RDO Equipment “I’m quite impressed with what the staff has been able to do with (the current) machine, in addition to helping with the slide slopes,” Schroeder said. “We were able to remove quite a bit more metal from the loads that have come in.”
The estimated cost of the John Deere is $172,740, compared to $176,500 for the Case model from Titan Machinery. The latter, though more expensive, comes with a one-year/500-hour warranty.
It was suggested by the board that Schroeder speak with the four landfill employees who are licensed to operate the excavator to get their thoughts on the machine. The board, which offered good points on both machines, will resume discussion at a future meeting.
In other business …
• The board approved a bid from Huffcutt for $139,920 for a pre-cast bathroom facility for Garvin Park, which should be installed next spring. The other bidder was Romtec Buildings & Pumping Systems ($195,000-$285,000).
• The board OK’d Schroeder to advertise for quotes for well installation, earth work, concrete, camper cabins, electrical and other utilities at Garvin Park. County staff will work with Contegrity Group Inc. It is expected the cabins will be installed in mid- to late August.
• The board approved Conditional Use Permits for Pulver Motor Company, LLC, and Action Rocks, LLC.
