Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers
Aug. 2, 1956 — Tracy’s junior Legion baseball team captured the Sub-district title Saturday night at Minneota by edging a strong Granite Falls nine 5-4. Merlyn Mickelson Scattered seven hits and fanned 11 as Granite Falls threatened to overtake Tracy in the final inning of a close contest. Red Sammons clobbered a double off the right field wall that that scored two runs.
Aug. 4, 1966 — Kurt Marben recovered early inning wildness to pitch the Tracy Pee Wees to a 6-1 victory over Lamberton in the first game of the annual Sanborn Watermelon Day Pee Wee tournament. Kurt allowed no hits, struck out 11, and walked six.
July 29, 1976 — Dave Daniels pitched his third consecutive victory for the Tracy VFW baseball team which scored a 7-1 playoff victory over Wilmont here Monday night to advance to the District 3 tournament Saturday and Sunday at Pipestone. In Monday’s game. Daniels gave up just two hits, while Tracy hitters collected five. Mike Mickelson had two, while Jeff Herder, Reed Wiecks and Kevin Radtke each picked up one.
Aug. 6, 1986 — Two-run homers by Mark Heidebrink and Gary Knudson backed the eight hit pitching of David Engesser at the Tracy Engineers opened Region 4C play with a 10-3 thrashing of Chokio Sunday night-in Chokio. The Engineers jumped off to an early lead and never looked back. A double by Heidebrink and Knudson’s single produced a run in the second inning and Mark Daniel’s single up the middle knocked in Randy Mclntire and Steve Mickelson in the third. Tracy added two runs in the fifth on Heidebrink’s two-run shot over the left-centerfield fence.
July 31, 1996 — In the Saturday game with Wilmont, left-handed Brian Dolan went all the way on the mound for Tracy with the game called in the sixth inning because of the 10-run rule. Dolan gave up no runs and only 4 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 8. Eighth-grader Derrick Rignell drove in Tracy’s 10th run with a single to right.
Aug. 9, 2006 — The Milroy Yankees stayed alive in the class C playoffs last Wednesday with a 5-2 win over Redwood Falls. Brian Dolan got the win with the help of John Schuh in the eighth inning. Andy Schmidt led the Yankee offense with a 4 for 5 night at the plate. He had a double, home run and three RBI. Dean Zwach was 2 for 4 and Brian Dolan 2 for 5.
Aug. 3, 2016 — Tracy VFW players Moses Dolan and Jake Byrne were selected to play
in the North vs. South VFW All-Star Game Tuesday, August 2, at Legion Field in Marshall.
