Sports Flashbacks

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

Aug. 9, 1956 — Al Farber slammed a basesloaded single in the bottom of the 12th inning Sunday to give Walnut Grove a 10-0 win over Wanda in the final playoff series of the Redwood County league.

Aug. 11, 1966 — The Engineers won two straight semi-final victories over Cotton-Wood Lake, the last a 19-4 win at Wood Lake Friday night in a barrage of 16 hits that included homers by Merle Mickelson and Gary Sandbo. Tracy won the first game 6-1.

Aug. 5, 1976 — The Breezy Point Softball team defeated John’s RX 17-3 in first round action of the league tournament at the elementary school diamond Monday evening. Dave Sanow got two homers for Breezy, one of the four-baggers being a grand-slam. Bob Rau hit four for four for the winning team. Arlen Thomas pitched the entire game for the winners. Laurie Thoma and Steve Knott did the hurling for John’s Drug.

Aug. 13, 1986 — Tracy-Milroy head football coach Gale Otto welcomed approximately 50 young athletes to the opening of football practice for the 1986 season Monday morning. Otto reported that the number of turnouts for the team included 13 freshmen among the 50 athletes. Otto stressed that he was very pleased with the number of young athletes who turned out for the opening of practice. Otto, who will be assisted by Jim Culhane, Charlie Goerish. and Al Landa, was happy with the turnout of Milroy athletes. About 20% of the Tracy-Milroy hopefuls attend Milroy High School.

Aug. 7, 1996 — The Tracy VFW baseball team qualified for state competition this week, by beating Marshall Blue 5-4 last week for the District 3 championship. Tracy improved its record to 27-1 while Marshall ended its season at 19-5. Four of Marshall’s defeats came at the hands of Tracy, while the only loss suffered by Tracy was to Marshall.

2006 — N/A Aug. 10, 2016 — Coach Paul Skoglund and the Panther Booster Club recently presented Courtney Paczkowski with her first-team allstate softball plaque. The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton athlete set numerous school softball records in a stellar senior season, including batting average (.604), hits (55), doubles (14), and career hits (118). Paczkowski was named to the Minnesota State Fast-Pitch Softball Coaching Association’s first-team, all-state team for Class A.
