Aug. 13, 1986 — Tracy police are seeking information from the public on the suspected attempted arson of the Jehovah’s Witnesses Church in Tracy last week. A flarelike incendiary device was thrown through a window of the Kingdom Hall Church building on Morgan street. When the flare was discovered Friday afternoon by a church member, the device had burned a four by four-foot area in the carpet. Damage was minimized because the carpet was laid over concrete and the fire had burned itself out by the time the damage was discovered at 4:13 p.m. Friday by parishioner John Pederson. “We’re treating this as an attempted arson,” commented Police Chief Curt Wiese. Had the carpet been laid over a wooden floor, Wiese said the church very likely could have been burned to the ground.
