Clock is ticking on my ‘freedom’

There Ya Go

Afriend with a daughter on the TMB volleyball team asked me at the Milroy Yankees game last Friday night if I was ready for volleyball to start. I said no.

Another person asked me earlier this week if I was ready for Box Car Days.

I said no. My responses had nothing to do with volleyball or BCD.

I love covering high school sports, and Labor Day weekend is great, too, as are the county fairs I work — stressful and hot, but great all the same. However, partly because I usually have to fight to not wilt under the heat and humidity that comes with summer, I’m not ready for anything that lies ahead.

Box Car Days and high school sports mean summer is coming to an end — doesn’t really feel like it, but it is. The weeks where I might have one, maybe two evening events to cover are coming to an end.

My saving grace is that I don’t really have a life outside of work, and since I mostly work seven days a week, there will be no shock to my system. But it is nice that I am able to eke out some down time here and there. With fall, there is no down time.

Now, fall does have its advantages. October weather can’t be topped. There are pennant chases (and the Twins, as I requested previously in my column, are still relevant). Then there’s football — Vikings, Gophers, any other college team you might follow. And football means fantasy football — say what you will, but fantasy football is the best, even if you’re not into sports. And then there’s the best holiday around, Halloween.

Yes, fall does have its perks. And I suppose if I want to keep getting paid, I better start getting mentally ready for high school sports.

Have cart, will travel… Last week, my guy at the Tyler Tribute, Mark Wilmes, humbly (and maybe in tongue-incheek fashion?) put out a call for a golf cart for him to use as he planned his covearge of Aebleskiver Days in Tyler.

To put some context to this, Mark doesn’t get around like he used to, and he knew it would be hot. That, combined with trying to cover everything a multiday event has to offer in late July, is not for the faint of heart. Thankfully, a number of Tyler people responded in kind, offering him the use of their cart. Minnesota Nice? That’s Small-Town nice.

And he inspired me to do the same, so if you have a cart sitting around during BCD, let me know! While I am more mobile than Mark, I’m still no spring chicken. And you can bet it will be another hot weekend. I can do my job without wheels, but …
