“Name that Year” is designed to put your knowledge of Tracy and its newsmakers of the past to the test. Each week, we will publish a news item that ran in a past edition — maybe it was a major event, or a story about a Tracy resident — it’s up to you to determine in what year that particular news item hit the pages of the paper:
• AFTER SETTLING INTO ITS NEW DOWNTOWN TRACY LOCATION IN AUGUST OF THIS YEAR, the Tracy American Legion has begun its annual fall membership drive.
“Our members have worked diligently to transform our new building into a nice facility for our meetings and other activities,” said Legion Commander Ernie Surprenant.
The Legion purchased and began remodeling the former Maria’s Cafe building on Fourth Street this spring, completing most work in time for Memorial Day. The Legion sold its Tracy Servicemen’s Center building last year.
The smaller quarters has new paint, woodwork and carpeting throughout. The club can easily seat 50 people. No problems were experienced feeding over 100 people at last Monday night’s corn feed.
“The new building will be used differently from the Servicemen’s Center, where we hosted big events for the public,” Surprenant explained. “We will have our meeting the fourth Monday of every month.”
• Last week’s answer: Tracy Nursing Home and the Prairie View Healthcare Center announced it will merge in 2006.
