An addendum to Lyon County’s contract for jail services with Murray County will mean the latter will pay more to house inmates.
The contract the Lyon County Board of Commissioners approved on Tuesday will raise the daily charge for Murray County to $125 per day in 2027. The cost includes booking, on-site nursing visits, laundry and meals for each inmate.
Work release fees collected from work release-eligible Murray County inmates will be deducted from the per-day fee that Murray County pays for the housing of a Murray County inmate for calendar year 2027.
For 2028, the charge to Murray County will go up again to $175 per day. The same stipulations apply.
Murray County inmates, on average, account for about 20% of Lyon County’s jail population. The cost for Lyon County to house an inmate is about $220 per day, compared to the statewide average of $400 per day.
In other news from Tuesday … The board also continued its discussion on the 2027 budget. Commissioners shared a number of ideas to get the levy as low as they can, including shuffling funds and cutting appropriations. No decisions were made, however.
