Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

Sept. 20, 1956 — The car of a 16-year-old rural Tracy youth was impounded by Tracy police last week after a warrant charging careless driving was lodged. His driver’s license was suspended in municipal court. The incident brought to light a problem which has mushroomed in the area — teenagers and automobiles. Law enforcement officials stated, in effect, that violations of the law, especially in this category, had reached the limit. Hereafter no warnings will be issued and violators will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. At the request of authorities, Supt. George Borneman pointed out the problem to a high school assembly and warned youngsters that careless driving and “drag” racing will not be tolerated by local officers. Municipal Judge Russ Brewster said that unless speeding, careless driving and continued violations by teenagers ceases immediately under duress of the new edict, additional charges will be prepared in some cases and additional penalties invoked. “Noon hour escapades with cars endangers lives and property,” Brewster said, “and Mayor Elmer Hanson has given the greenlight for officers to take whatever steps are needed. I intend to give out severe punishment from here on in.”
