Remember When

Sept. 27, 1956 — Five persons were hospitalized here Monday morning and three others were given physical check-ups, as a result of a two-car crash, at the Garvin corner, six miles west of this city, an accident which took place shortly after 9 a.m. A car driven by Byron Bower, of Bridgewater, Iowa, crashed into another, driven by Donald E. Baker of Sedro-Woolley, Wash. According to on-thescene information, Bower, accompanied by his father and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Bower of Fontanelle, Iowa, a brother, Collins Bower of Massena, Iowa, and their aunt, Mrs. Etta Pickrell, also of Massena, were enroute to their homes after having a 25th wedding anniversary at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Vestal Pickrell, living near Canby. The Bower car, heading south, stopped for the lights at the corner, pulling up directly behind another car which had stopped at the intersection. When the lights changed, both cars started forward, and the Bower machine hit the car driven by Baker, which had entered the intersection without stopping for the red light, it was reported by officers. Four of the occupants of the Bower car, save the father of the driver, were thrown from the force of the impact.

Sept. 29, 1966 — Grand opening of John’s Rx Drug, the former Joe Dietz pharmacy purchased July 1st by John Schleppenbach will be held this weekend starting today and continuing through Saturday. Prizes every hour throughout the three days, three major prizes, free balloons and suckers for the kids, and reduced prices on merchandise will be features of the new owner, get-acquainted grand opening event. Schleppenbach, associated with Dietz for three years before buying the store, invited everyone to come in and get acquainted, and register for prizes.

Sept. 23, 1976 — A group of 81 persons attended the 65th anniversary open house of the Tracy Sunshine Society last Friday afternoon at the Centennial Homes activity room in Tracy. The Society, which is busy throughout the year with a wide variety of community service projects, was organized in September 1911 with about 12 members. The membership now is 29, and longtime members include Sadie Van Dusen since 1923; and Esther Mattson, since 1946. Some of the work of the Sunshine Society includes loaning home care equipment free of charge: sending birthday cards to Tracy residents over 80 and to all residents of the nursing homes; sponsoring one campership to Lyon County A.K.C. Camp: making a contribution to each special education class; providing new or used clothing and food to .hose in special need; helping persons in time of disaster; giving money for game prizes at nursing homes; and at Thanksgiving time a box of apples is given to each nursing home.

Oct. 1, 1986 — Curtis L. Goltz, son of Gerald and Mary Goltz, has enlisted in the Air Force’s Delayed Enlistment Program and is scheduled to enter active duty in June of next year. On June 10, 1987, he will fly to San Antonio, Texas, where he will attend the Air Force’s six-week basic training program at Lackland Air Force Base. Goltz, who will be a 1987 graduate of Tracy High School, is scheduled for training in the electronics career area after successful completion of basic training.

Sept. 25, 1996 — Tracy Public Schools spent more money than it took in last year. District 417’s annual audit for the 1995-96 school year showed a general fund deficit of $74,115. Transportation had a red ink of $17,324, Community Service lost $31,555, and Capital Expenditures showed a deficit of $12,431. Of the school district’s five major funds, only Food Service had a positive balance for the year.

Sept. 27, 2006 — Eight people have filed for election to Tracy city government positions. Five names will be on the ballot for Tracy City Council: Russ Stobb, Lary Parker, Jan Arvizu, Michael Martin, and Tony Peterson. Stobb and Arvizu are incumbents. Councilman Tim Byrne did not file for reelection. Three people have filed for a four-year term to serve as mayor: incumbent Steve Ferrazzano, Sandi Rettmer, and Marv Van Acker.

Sept. 28, 2016 — The tenure of Mike Votca as Tracy City Administrator is officially over. Votca’s last day on the job was Monday. His attendance at the Monday night city council meeting was his last duty. Votca, who has accepted a position as the city administrator in Belle Plaine, planned to move from his Orchard Lane apartment on Tuesday. Votca said it had been a pleasure to work for the City of Tracy, adding that he felt that the city has a very professional staff that strives to provide the best possible services.
