“Name that Year” is designed to put your knowledge of Tracy and its newsmakers of the past to the test. Each week, we will publish a news item that ran in a past edition — maybe it was a major event, or a story about a Tracy resident — it’s up to you to determine in what year that particular news item hit the pages of the paper:
• IT WAS THE LAST CALL FOR THE TRACY MUNICIPAL BAR THIS YEAR, as the South St. establishment served up its last drinks as a city-owned entity. But even though draft beers and mixed drinks were discounted, the mood among patrons was anything but celebratory.
“I hate to see it close. It doesn’t make sense,” said Ivan Johnson. “It doesn’t make sense to close it,” said Bob Horner. “They still have to keep the lights on and heat the other side to keep the off-sale open.”
The bar customers were lamenting the Tracy City Council’s decision to close the on-sale portion of the municipal liquor store. Saturday, Oct. 1, was the city bar’s last day of operations.
The council is also studying the possibility of moving the profitable off-sale retail portion of the liquor store to a more visible, but still unspecified location along Hwy. 14.
No one could be found at the bar Saturday afternoon who was happy about the decision to close the municipal bar.
“It sucks,” said Mike Miller, who sometimes stops by the bar on his way home from work at a Tracy area hog enterprise.
• Last week’s answer: Prairie View hosted a 50th anniversary party in September of 2016.
