Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers
Oct. 4, 1956 — Two characteristics that have become tradition among Tracy High School football squads helped explode the Scrappers to a 34-0 homecoming over Sleepy Eye here Friday night. All-round aggressiveness and a hardcharging line set the stage for some excellent backfield running that racked up 472 net yards to Sleepy Eye’s 134 to produce Tracy’s third Ten Star conference victory. David (Red) Sammons played one of the top games of his high school career. The three-year regular consistently dug for extra yardage and his alertness on defense checked any long runs that could have been potential touchdowns.
Oct. 6, 1966 — A powerful Canton, SD, football team gave Tracy an initial first period touchdown and then dominated Friday night’s homecoming fracas at the athletic field. The final score was Canton 36, Tracy 13. Using a hefty all-senior squad loaded with desire, the C-Hawks overcame penalties and fumbles that slowed them but never stopped a devastating attack that shredded Scrapper defenses as never before. Jerry Kathman and Brain Stewart scored the Scrappers’ TDs.
Sept. 30, 1976 — Milroy’s Terry Dolan set a record in winning first place boys honors in a cross country meet held Monday afternoon at Milroy. Dolan completed the rugged three-mile course in 17:25 lo finish first.
Oct. 8, 1986 — Tracy-Milroy survived an inauspicious beginning and rebounded to win the Southern Sioux Conference volleyball tournament. Against Minneota, Sandy Dolan had 11 ace hits, followed by Mary Jo Miller with nine, Elaine Eischens with four and Julie West with two. West and Eischens had eight and six blocks, respectively. Miller was the leading server, hitting on 16 of 17 tried and scored 14 points.
Oct. 2, 1996 — The Tracy-Milroy volleyball team improved their record to 12-4 with a 3-0 sweep of the Canby Lancers Tuesday night. The game scores were 15-0,15-1 and 15-1. Nadine Brandt led the team in hitting with 14 kills while Kris DeRuyck had 9. Nancy Ankrum was 13 of 13 serving with 5 aces, Stephanie Welvaert was 13 of 13 with 1 ace, Monica Peterson was 6 of 6 with 1 ace, DeRuyck was 7 of 8 with 2 aces and Brandt was 8 of 9 with 5 aces.
Oct. 4, 2006 — The Panther volleyball team swept the Lincoln HI. Rebels at Ivanhoe Thursday night. Shelbie Jones and Jackie Haecherl were each 14 of 15 in serving with an ace. Mallory Fultz led the attack with 9 kills to go with 4 blocks, Jones had 9 digs. Haecherl had 10 set assists and Lindsey Daniels 7.
Oct. 5, 2016 — Jessie Nelson has been honored for her volleyball play at Rochester Community Technical College. The 2016 Tracy Area High School graduate was named one of four “Athletes of the Week” for MCAC Southern Division volleyball. The 6-0 freshman was named the league’s “hitter of the week,” for contributing 41 kills during four matches. She had 16 kills and a .452 attack percentage in a 3-2 loss to Iowa Central.
