Sports Flashbacks

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers

Oct. 11, 1956 — Tracy high school’s Scrappers couldn’t stand prosperity, and when the final gun sounded at the athletic field Friday night the score stood: Tracy 0, Slayton 0. The overconfident Scrappers tried desperately to recoup in the second half, but fumbleitis took its toll. Statistically, both teams played an even game. Tracy penetrated to the Slayton 18 yard line in the first half and got several drives going in the second, but fumbles or pass interceptions stopped the gainers. Red Sammons and Butch Gregoire, who teamed in an attempt to pull this one out, gained the most yards. Sammons got 110 yards in 9 tries for over 12 yards per carry while Gregoire got 37 on 10 tries for 3.7 yards per carry.

Oct. 13, 1966 — Tracy high school’s football team saw one of the greatest comebacks in prep history Friday night as Wells rallied from a mid-third quarter 28-7 deficit to stun the Scrappers at Tracy athletic field. Tracy-Milroy, ranked seventh in the state in the Class A poll, fell behind early in each of the three games.
