Remember When

Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers April 21, 1955 — Mrs. Delbert Grove, and children Gaylen and Kathlene left on the noon train from Garvin Monday for Seattle, WA, and will sail from there for Japan to join her husband T-SgL Greve, who has been stationed near Nagoya, Japan, since November. Mrs. Grove and children have spent the past months with her mother, Mrs. Albin Wablin of Garvin. T-Sgt Greve joined the Air Force about eight years ago and was stationed at Offutt Air Base, Omaha, NE, for seven years.

April 22, 1965 — Tracy men, Wm. R. Mitchell and Jerry Kor, had a narrow escape from drowning in icy Lake Shetek Saturday afternoon when they clung to their overturned boat for 45 minutes before being rescued. Two young boys from LeMars, Iowa, hearing their screams for help, threw a rope tied to a bottle out to the men to make the rescue. The mishap occurred Saturday afternoon as Mitchell and Kor in an aluminum boat were trying to retrieve some timbers in front of the Mitchell cottage north of Valhalla on the west shore of the big lake, then still full of ice except along the shorelines.

April 17, 1975 — Chris Kamrud, president of the Tracy Jaycees, was honored at a Marshall regional meeting and presented the Minnesota Presidential Award by State President Bud Squires of Detroit Lakes. With encouragement from his wife. Dianne, he has been very active in Jaycee activities locally, and also represented the Tracy area at all district, regional and state Jaycee meetings, working to “build a better world” for his daughter Heather and everyone.

April 18, 1985 — The Tracy FFA general livestock team captured first place in regional competing. Team members Brenda Edwards and Jim Eischens were the top two individuals, respectfully, in the competition that involved FFA members from 27 other schools. Other members are Karl Campbell, Brian Hicks and Keith Hoffbeck.

April 19, 1995 — In six years, Christina “Chrissy” Muedeking has come a long way from Tracy High School. In the spring of 1989, Muedeking was a senior at Tracy High School, active in 4-H and speech, and poised to graduate with honors from THS. This spring, Muedeking is a staffer working for Congressman David Minge in Washington, D.C., with a chance to help draft and influence the 1995 federal farm bill. “Sometimes, it’s a little amazing to me, too,” admitted the former Tracy Comets 4-H leader and Miss Tracy runnerup, in a telephone interview from Washington. Muedeking, scheduled to graduate from George Washington University law school in May, began work for Minnesota Second District Congressman David Minge on Monday.

April 20, 2005 — Bobbi Buyck and Rebecca Gervais earned medals at the Minnesota Class A speech meet. Buyck was seventh in storytelling, while Gervais was eighth “Great Speeches.”

April 22, 2015 — A solar energy project proposed for 200-acres of land near Tracy has moved closer to becoming a reality. The Lyon County Board of Commissioners voted Tuesday to grant a conditional use permit to Minnesota Solar, LLC., for the construction of a 24.5 megawatt “solar photovoltaic energy generation facility.” The county’s planning and zoning board recommended the permit following an April 14 public hearing. The solar farm site is north of the Northern States Power substation at the intersection of Hwy. 14 and the Highline Road (330th Ave). Minnesota Solar has entered into a 25year lease agreement with landowners Ron McDaniel, Apple Valley, and his sister, Nyla McDaniel Nordvik, Sammamish, WA, for the use of the site.
