Milroy School Board renews expiring operating referendum

The Milroy School Board approved a resolution at Monday’s meeting renewing the expiring operating referendum authority for the district. The original referendum was voter approved on Nov. 3, 2015, starting with taxes payable in 2017.

State statute allows school districts to extend the referendum one time as long as the referendum is within the last two fiscal years of the referendum and the per pupil amount of the referendum is the same as the expiring referendum including those that were adjusted annually by the rate of inflation.

The current operating referendum in Milroy does account for inflation. When originally approved, the amount was $3,466.88 per child. The current amount is $4,343.89 per child. The renewed referendum revenue authorization will be applicable for 10 years, beginning with taxes payable 2027.

The Tracy School Board is expected to take the same action on its current operating referendum at the July school board meeting. Both schools must renew their referenda prior to becoming a consolidated district or they are unable to renew current referenda.

Milroy Supt. John Willey also gave an update on the consolidation process for the Milroy School District. After speaking with parents, the school is looking at enrollment of about 30 students for the 2025-2026 High Low Precip

school year. This would be the final year of Milroy Public School. Talks continue with the Tracy board and administration. Currently, Willey is looking for input from the community and area if they have ideas or interest in the current Milroy school building.

For the final year of Milroy Public School, the school calendar was approved at the April meeting. The first day of school will be Sept. 2, 2025. Winter break will be Dec. 22-Jan. 2.

The last day of school for Milroy students will be May 22, 2026.
