Excerpts from past Tracy newspapers 

May 3, 1955 — A-2c John E. Sandbo, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. A. Sandbo of Tracy won the coveted “Airman of the Month” honors at Ellsworth Air Force Base, Rapid City. The distinction carries with it the award of a $25 U. S. savings bond and a certificate. These honors were presented to the Tracy young man by Col. A.W. Nielsen, commander of the 28th Strategic Reconnaissance.

May 6, 1965 — Gary Hohler, local young man, will go on a five-minute shopping spree at Bill’s Super Fair — to load as much as he can in a shopping cart except for tobaccos and non-food items. This unusual opportunity resulted from having his name drawn In the current Pepsi-Cola sponsored $2,000,000 Shopping Spree and the further chance to maybe win a $40,000 home, a new car, or possibly a 15-minute shopping spree for groceries, and numerous other gifts.

May 1, 1975 — Ken Burmeister was installed as the new Tracy Jaycees vicepresident, succeeding Chris Kamrud. Cheri Janssen is the new president, succeeding Charlene Sliter.

May 2, 1985 — The grand opening of the J & M Cafe in Tracy is set for Thursday. Jack and Marilyn Heacock, formerly of Fairfax, opened the J & M in the former Hi-Ho Cafe building Monday. “We’re looking forward to meeting and accommodating the people,” commented Jack Heacock. The cafe building was purchased from Art and Sylvia Keheler, who operated the Hi-Ho until closing it late last year.

May 3, 1995 — Maria’s Cafe has closed its doors. The business-which opened a year ago closed Saturday. An inability to work out a new lease on the restaurant building is the reason for closure, co-owner Maria DcLaCruz said. “I am very sad. I did not want to close. My family had worked very hard.” She and her husband. Rene, also had a chance to buy the building. She said, however, the finances did not work out.

May 4, 2003 — Move over, Garth Brooks. Park your Ford pickup, Toby Keith. Adjust your hat, Tim McGraw. Make room for Derek Daniels. No, the Tracy teen isn’t likely to supplant the country music stars any time soon. But Daniels, 17, has done something the celebrities haven’t. Last week, Daniels got a standing ovation from 3,000 people after performing at Northrop Auditorium. “It was a really cool experience,” the Tracy Area High School junior said. Daniels sang and played the guitar three times at the state FFA convention in Minneapolis, and won the FFA State talent contest.

May 6, 2015 — The Balaton community remembered and honored Jim and Cathy Hively Tuesday, while trying to comprehend the unspeakable tragedy that had taken their lives. Funeral services were held at Victory Christian Church Tuesday morning for Jim Hively, 75, and his wife, Cathy, 71. The bodies of the couple were found in their burning farmhouse, two miles south of Russell, on Thursday morning. According to charges filed in Lyon County District Court on Monday, the couple were the victims of homicide.
