Alex Munson used the best four-hole stretch of his career to edge last year’s Class A second-place finisher on his home course at Lakeview last Tuesday.
The senior was 2 over par heading into hole 6 and hit a perfect driver to cut the dog leg left and put himself 30 yards out on a par 4. He then got up-and-down for birdie. He followed that with a birdie on the longest par 5 in conference play. He hit a driver, 3 wood to get in position to make a great chip for a short birdie putt. He also made a 25-foot putt to save par on the par 3 8th hole. On the par 5 9th hole, he needed par to win the tournament. His drive kicked under a pine tree and he had to punched out, but hit a solid approach shot to the middle of the green and two-putted for the win.
“I got in a groove off the tee and hit some nice short shots on 6 and 7 to give me tap-in birdies,” he said. “I ended up shooting my second best score ever (36) and I’m excited to keep improving down the stretch.”
Taylor Munson struggled a bit, shooting a 51 for 4th place. “I didn’t play my best game at Lakeview,” she said. “My chipping was what really hurt me. I need to focus more so I can do better for the future.”
Piper Shulte shot a 61 for 13th place. “I started off bad but in the end I started to do better — better than my last meet,” she said.
Seventh-graders Gavin Fischer and Charles Xiong played their first conference matches. Xiong had a par on the 5th hole and finished with a 55. Fischer’s best hole was a bogey on hole 2 and he shot a 59.
“I shot a 55 which is not the best score but I will do better,” Xiong said.
“I wasn’t doing too hot until the end,” Fischer said. “I started to get better shots from the tee box, but at the end I got a 59 which is the same score I shot at the Slayton Country Club.”
• Last Friday at RCW, Alex Munson shot a 43 for 6th place, and Schulte had a 54, tying Taylor Munson for third.
“She shot her best round of the year,” coach Munson said. “This is Piper’s first top 3 finish in a Conference meet. Piper has been hitting her drives and fairway woods really well. She was very consistent all day, not having any ‘blow up’ holes.”
Trenton Johnson carded a 51. “Trenton had a good day for the guys, with a course that was playing really difficult he had one of his best rounds with a 51,” coach Munson said. “Trenton was sick earlier in the week and wasn’t at full strength, but mentally played a great day of golf.
Xiong had a 52. “He started off really strong with 4 over through the first 5 holes, he was making some long putts and hitting well off the tees,” coach Munson said. “He was in the top 5. He struggled down the finish ending with a 52 for 24th. Gavin had to start on the most difficult hole on the course and struggled through that hole. After that, he played a lot better and was in a grove towards the end.”
TMB will golf in Tracy for the first time this year today.
