Tara’s Takes
The first full week of May is a busy one. It is teacher appreciation week, It is also national nurses week, children’s mental health acceptance week and pet appreciation week. Every one of these are a reason to celebrate and appreciate those who make our schools and healthcare run. But there is one more week that we need to celebrate.
This week is National Small Business Week. This is the week we truly need to take the time to thank the small business owners who make the commitment to our communities.
Saturday night I attended the Tracy Area High School grand march, and as you walked in there was a large sign listing all the businesses that contributed to the event.
Also, we are just a few short weeks away from the start of the summer rec program. When the kids start playing, there will be logos on the back of their shirts. A quick look around at almost every project that is happening in our local communities and you can identify small businesses that are contributing to the success.
In addition to the community support they offer, small businesses are also our neighbors and friends. These are the people we see at the grocery store and in church on Sunday. These are the people we can trust. Doing business with those we know makes it a better experience. When you go to The Caboose and Ariel knows your drink when you sit down, you know it’s going to be a better dinner out.
These are the things we need to celebrate this week. We need to celebrate those small business owners who were willing to take the scary leap into business ownership. We celebrate those who ride the roller coaster of small business ownership. We need to celebrate those who have fulfilled a need in our community while fulfilling a dream of their own.
Friday, I planted the flower pots at the office. I’ve gotten multiple compliments on them already. All the flowers came from Greenwood Nursery while the fresh wood chips came from Midwest Supply.
In one short afternoon I had brought life to the flower boxes and I never had to leave town. I can do this because of two small business owners who chose Tracy for their future.
So this week as you’re busy keeping up with endof- the-school-year activities, enjoying the weather we’re finally having and keeping up with life, also take time to thank our local small business owners. They truly are the heartbeat of the community and keep us going.
