CAMDEN CONFERENCE GOLF

Alex Munson shot a 78, good for seventh place at Tuesday’s Camden Conference Meet at the Tyler Golf Club on Tuesday.

“I definitely didn’t have my ‘A’ game today,” Munson said. “I was fighting my driver all day; I think I hit three fairways. When you do that, especially on the back 9, it makes it tough. And I also had three penalty strokes.”

Munson put his 78 into perspective with those three penalty strokes, knowing he can do much better as the section tournament nears.

Golfers were fighting some strong crosswind gusts on Tuesday, making things even more challenging on what is already a pretty tough 18-hole course.

“Usually the front nine is pretty easy here — it’s open, there’s not very many trees, but when the wind is gusting like it was, it’s pretty tough,” Munson said. “The back nine is a lot about course management — a lot of interesting shots, a lot of elevation changes. It’s definitely tougher than Marshall, where we usually have (the conference meet). All the scored were up a little bit from last year in Marshall.”

Munson said the greens in Tyler are some of the fastest he’s seen this year, and the lack of rain this recently, made for some slick greens Tuesday.

“These are some of the faster greens, but they really don’t have any double-breakers like RCW or Becker,” Munson said. “They’re definitely tougher than a course like Tracy, but they’re still getable.”

Trenton Johnson had a big day, finishing with a 90, including a 44 on the front nine — his low score for the year. His previous best was a 48 in Tracy last week.

“I was kind of on-and-off; my driver was pretty good, so it worked out in the end. Johnson said. “I was consistent enough not to fall off throughout the back nine.”

Johnson also wasn’t a fan of Tuesday’s wind.

“It definitely didn’t help that it was so windy today,” he said. “I have a slice, and there’s quite a few holes that if you have a slice, it’s going to affect you. Thankfully, I played it well enough; I just didn’t use my driver on some of the holes.”

Other TMB scores from Tuesday: Piper Schulte, 95; Taylor Munson, 99; Charles Xiong, 89; and Gavin Fischer, 128.

TMB is scheduled to host a triangular today, and the section tournament will begin May 21 in Worthington.
