Murray County 4-H and Murray County Emergency Management Department receive donation for Home Alone Safety for Kids!

As the school year has concluded, the Murray County 4-H Program has teamed up with Murray County Emergency Management to host a Home Alone Safety Training for Kids made possible by a donation from the Murray County Economic Development Authority Department.

When thinking about community needs, Murray County 4-H Youth Development Educator Kim Hause again chose to collaborate with Carl Nyquist, who is the Murray County Emergency Management Director. With an ever-changing world, one thing that remains constant is that youth grow up and need to learn the essentials on how to take care of themselves and others while they are home alone. By hosting a “Home Alone Safety for Kids” workshop, this allows youth of any age to learn how to stay at home by themselves responsibly. This event will cover fire safety, encountering emergencies, first aid practices, telephone & door answering, and activity plans. Youth and volunteers will gather on June 5 at the Murray County 4-H Building to participate in this new event.

“We wanted to do something that benefited all school districts within Murray County lines,” Hause said. “It is something that all families with kids transition to, so we thought, let’s create an event that is open to all ages that are safe to leave home alone and teach them safety and the basics of staying home alone.” But little did they know how big of a response they would get.

The Murray County Economic Development Authority Department graciously donated $250 to this event after seeing the response it had not only within the Slayton Community, but also Tracy, Lake Wilson, Hadley, Iona, and Edgerton areas. With these funds, youth will be able to take home a practical first-aid kit, flashlight, backpack and a family conversation workbook that helps with guidelines on what youth are supposed to do in certain situations.
