Marshall wins easily, 9-3, despite committing 8 errors
In a game where anything that could go wrong did — a ground ball off the nose of Milroy third baseman Brock Schultz, the infield sprinklers going off late in the game — the Marshall A’s earned a 9-3 win over Milroy on Sunday despite committing eight errors.
“They had six errors in the first five innings; we got three (total) runs off them, but credit to Mitch (A’s starter Bowman), he backed them up after the errors by pitching well,” Milroy comanager Aaron Mathiowetz said.
The Yankees got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning, but should’ve gotten more. Half of Marshall’s miscues came in that opening frame.
Andy Schmidt reached on the first error and made his way to third base on two, two-out errors. He scored on, what else, another A’s error, but Milroy stranded two runners.
With Isaac Schmidt in control on the mound — he struck out six over the first three innings — Milroy plated two more runs in the bottom of the fifth off Bowman, who had struck out the side the inning before.
Schmidt walked and Branden Flock reached on an error. Mathiowetz reached on a fielder’s choice, with Schmidt retired at third. After Brock Schultz flied out, Alex Schuh laced a solid, two-out double to right-centerfield to score Flock and Mathiowetz.
Meanwhile, Isaac Schmidt continued dealing, picking up his eighth strikeout to end the fifth.
After Milroy went down in order in the fifth, things got messy for Milroy.
Tyler Kraft singled to open the sixth, and after recording the first out on a fly ball, Isaac Schmidt walked the next two to load the bases for Wesley Sarsland, who singled to get the A’s on the board. The next four A’s reached (three walks and a hit-by-pitch), setting the stage for Connor Neubeck, who doubled off Milroy reliever Austin Deutz to cap off an eight-run inning.
Marshall tacked on its ninth run in the seventh.
Bowman overcame the multitude of Marshall errors to earn the complete-game win. It seemed the worse the defense behind him got, the better he pitched, as he finished with 15 strikeouts. Bowman threw 139 pitches — 97 of them for strikes — and allowed just five hits. He stranded seven through the first five innings.
Isaac Schmidt struck out eight — all before the fateful sixth inning — and allowed six earned runs. He walked six, with all but one coming in the sixth. He also hit two batters.
“He said he felt good, the wheels just fell off a little bit there,” Mathiowetz said. “It’s still early in the year, and I think we maybe pushed him a little harder than we should’ve. Against Marshall, you want to have Isaac on the mound.”
