Irish pull out more late-inning victories

The Milroy Irish, the local version of the “Cardiac Kids,” did it again last Wednesday by scoring three eighth-inning runs to rally for a 4-2 win over the Worthington Cubs.

Milroy followed that up with two more wins Sunday.

Wednesday’s game was tied 1-1 after seven before the Cubs scored the go-ahead run in the eighth. Then it was Milroy’s to warm up their previously cold bats.

Dominic Dolan got things going with a single down the left field line. Derek Smith would get an infield hit past the pitcher with one out, making it first and third as the second baseman misplayed the ball and Dolan advanced to third. Smith would steal second base and Dolan scored the tying run on the throw to second base.

After the Irish loaded the sacks, Levi Maeyaert singled over the second baseman’s head to score the gamewinning runs.

Tyler Maeyaert set an Irish record by striking out 19 batters over 7-2/3 innings. Craig Lasley cleaned up in the eighth after Maeyaert was lifted, and Trevor Smith earned the save, striking out two in the top of the ninth.

At the plate, Anthony Dolan would lead the way going 2-for-3 with a walk. Levi Maeyaert ended up 2-for-4 with two RBI, and Andrew Wallen also added an RBI.

In the Lakefield game, Tyler Maeyaert drove in five runs on three hits. Maeyaert doubled in the third scoring two, singled in the fifth scoring one, doubled in the sixth scoring one, and walked in the seventh scoring one.

The Irish (7-2) jumped out to the lead in the top of the third inning after Maeyaert doubled, scoring two runs, and Andrew Wallen hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one. Milroy scored five runs on one hit in the top of the seventh inning. Jacob Dykes drew a walk, scoring one run, Maeyaert drew a walk, scoring another, and Derek Smith doubled to knock in three runs.
