Sports Flashbacks

June 16, 1955 — Tracy won its fifth Redwood County League game against three losses last Thursday when it defeated Slayton 7-2 behind the two-hit pitching of Eddie McFarlane. McFarlane struck out 14 Slayton batters and also had a basesloaded double. Lee Brandt had two doubles and Duane Michelson tripled.

June 17, 1965 — Nick Kurtz vaulted to first place in the broad jump at the state track and field meet at Macalester College. The senior leaped 22 feet, 8 inches, the second best jump in state high school history.

June 12, 1975 — Tracy’s VFW team under the direction of Laurie Thoma won its opening game Friday 6-1 over Morgan. The locals scored all the runs they would need in the first on walks to Mike Mickelson and Scott Thoma, a double steal and a two-run single by pitcher Jim Drackley.

June 13, 1985 — A grand slam by Dale VandeWiele propelled the Scrappers to a 5-2 win over Sanborn-Lamberton in the Region 3A title game. They are now preparing to face Lake of the Woods in the opening round of the state tournament at St. Cloud.

June 14, 1995 — Three Panthers — Kris DeRuyck, Leah Gifford and Chad Willard — found themselves on the winners’ podium receiving top state medals. Other disappointed TMB athletes were left with thoughts of what might have been. DeRuyck came home with two Class A state medals, a second in the 300 meter intermediate hurdles and a fourth in the 100 meter hurdles. Willard capped off his prep career with a fifth in the pole vault.

June 15, 2005 — The Tracy-Milroy-Balaton 4x200 meter relay team had lots to smile about, after earning a fifth-place state medal. Team members are Matt Rosa, Dan Tutt, Trevor Morin and Drew Nelson. Dan Tutt received a fourth-place medal in the pole vault, and Bobbi Buyck was fifth in the 100-meter hurdles.

June 17, 2015 — Competing in the state Class A golf meet in Becker didn’t go the way Devin Skalak had hoped. The senior shot two of the worst rounds of the past two years — a 96 and a 93 — to finish far back. “I was very disappointed with how my scores worked out,” Skalak said.
