Center St. RR crossing fix should come this summer

After months of communication with Canadian Pacific Railway, and more than a few complaints from residents, it appears fixes at the railroad crossing on Center St. will soon come to fruition.

Tracy Community Development Director Tom Dobson happily informed the Tracy City Council on Monday that CPR will address the much-maligned crossing later this summer, likely next month.

Dobson said a railroad official told him recently that the crossing is in bad enough shape to legitamize an upgrade. He said there are two ways to approach the project.

“One would be a concrete crossing, which they had asked the county to pay a portion of,” Dobson said. “Or, it could be similar to what we have at other crossings, with brand-new railroad ties and new asphalt being brought in.”

coverage can be found on their responsibility to pay for the fix. Dobson said he forwarded a bid to Lyon County Commissioner Rick Anderson, whose district includes Tracy.

“He forwarded that to the road maintenance department there, and I received a call from him (Monday) thanking me for doing this,” said Dobson. “He said he didn’t even realize it was in the works.”

Moving forward, the project is now in the County’s hands, and the wood railroad ties option is the most likely one they will go with, with CPR taking care of the new wood ties and the County doing the asphalt work and paying for it “It looks like it will be a summer project,” Dobson said. “You never know, they could call a week before and say, ‘We’re going to be starting on this particular day.’ I asked (the County) to keep us informed. My hope will be that it’s done before school.”

Anderson spoke with the project engineer Tuesday morning and confirmed the fix will happen soon.

“It’s shot,” Anderson said of the crossing. “It needs to be replaced.”
