Milroy teams suffer Friday night setbacks

Milroy teams suffer Friday night setbacks

Irish fall 1-0 to Jenniges, Longsox; Yankees yield 9-run inning in loss to Jaxx

Familiar foes Trevor Smith and Hudsen Jenniges met once again as pitchers last Friday when the Irish took on the Lamberton LongSox.

And like their encounter at the end of the regular high school season won 5-4 by RRC/WWG, Jenniges and his team came out on top by one run as Lamberton won 1-0 over Smith’s Irish.

Quintyn Vold scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning. The Irish stranded two runners in both the first and third innings and threatened in the fifth but were unable to push a run across against Jenniges.

Derek Smith had three singles for Milroy, Moses Dolan doubled, and Noah Knakmuhs singled and walked.

Trevor Smith and Jenniges were both tough on their respective opponent Friday. Smith struck out four over six innings in the tough-luck loss. Jenniges struck out 14.

Travis Willhite had a single for the LongSox. The Irish play in Jordan on Sunday and won’t play at home again until June 28 against Morris.

JAXX 9, YANKEES 5

The Milroy Yankees took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning of Friday’s game against Wabasso. Then the proverbial roof caved in on them. The Jaxx scored nine runs in the fourth — each player who came to the plate scored — and went on to win 9-5.

Things started well for the home team, as the first two batters reached and scored. Branden Flock led off the first with a double and scored on a single by Andy Schmidt. Schmidt then scored on a double by Aaron Mathiowetz two batters later.

Milroy starter Parker Schmitt got through the first three innings unscathed, striking out three in the process.

But then the fourth inning happened. The Jaxx sent 16 hitters to the plate in the inning and collected six hits; five batters walked and one was hit by a pitch. All nine runs were charged to Schmitt.

Milroy scored a run in the fourth on a sac fly by Andy Schmidt, one in the sixth on a home run by David Schmidt and another in the eighth on an RBI a base hit by Jackson Hughes to lead off the inning, another double by Flock and a ground out by Andy Schmidt.

Flock ended with three hits, and David Schmidt, Mathiowetz and Hughes each had two hits.

Milroy batters struck out 19 times. Wabasso starter Adryen Tietz collected 10, and Devan Liebl had the other nine.

Milroy will host Bird Island at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and Willmar at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
