Remember When

June 23, 1955 — Tracy’s 55th Transportation company led off assault exercises last Monday as Guardsmen tried to take uninhabited haystack Island, a densely wooded hill in the middle of Lake Alexander, in mock amphibious exercises at Camp Ripley. The men dash out of wooded assembly areas, scramble into waiting DUKWs on the launching beach, and squat in the low slung deck areas to “protect” themselves from small arms fire. Obituaries: Mrs. Otto Holm, Rasmus Larsen, Irene Overturf

June 24, 1965 — Tracy Enterprises, Inc., has picked its Box Car Day queen candidate. She is Pat Stassen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Don Stassen. She joins the list with four others already chosen to compete for the Miss Tracy title: Linda Holstein, Nancy Abernethy, Peggy Anderson and Robert Forbregd.

Obituaries: Mrs. John Broers

June 19, 1975 — Geraldine Bartlett, daughter of Mrs. Johanna Bartlett of Tracy, was the first-place winner in the second annual poster contest sponsored by the Lyon County Soil and Water Conservation District.

June 20, 1985 — Susan Deal, daughter of Harold and Jacqueline Deal, rural Walnut Grove, graduated magna cum laude at commencement ceremonies held in the Johnson Fieldhouse, University of Wisconsin Stout at Menomonie, WI. Susan majored in home economics in business (consumer affairs concentration) with a minor in business administration.

June 21, 1995 — Ruth Sanders has assumed ownership of the former Goltz Eastside convenience store on June 3. “It worked out well. I teach math at the Tracy High School and school was out at the same time. I will spend most of my summer hours here at the store until school starts in the fall,” said Sanders. Right now, she and her right hand helper, Bev Karsten, are keeping business running pretty much as before.

Obituaries: Gladys Purves, Elwood Dahlgren

June 22, 2005 — The “Fidos” of Tracy might someday have a spot to roam free within the city if a proposed “dog run” becomes a reality at Swift Lake Park. But until then, Tracy leaders advise dog owners to keep their animals on a leash. “We’ve got an ordinance (against dogs running at large) and I think we should enforce it,” said Councilman Bill Chukuske at a June 13 meeting. The council discussion was sparked by concerns aired at May 31 meeting that some dog owners are allowing animals to run loose in Swift Lake Park without leashes. Public Works Director Rick Robinson suggested that a dog run be considered along the north side of Swift Lake Park. However, this plan will require 1,100 feet of fencing. Council members felt that it would be wise to postpone the dog run, until the fencing could be incorporated into an airport improvement project, possibly as early as 2007.

Obituaries: Alma Galstad

June 24, 2015 — A very special birthday will be celebrated at the Wheels Across the Prairie Museum next week. The steam switch engine that greets visitors coming into Tracy from the west is 100 years old this year. In honor of the anniversary, the museum is holding an open house in the 1915 switch engine’s honor. On July 1 from 5:30-8:30 p.m., museum volunteers will be serving ice cream and cake and giving rides on the museum’s miniature train.

Obituaries: Jerry Hinz, Brian Carlson
