“Name that Year” is designed to put your knowledge of Tracy and its newsmakers of the past to the test. Each week, we will publish a news item that ran in a past edition — maybe it was a major event, or a story about a Tracy resident — it’s up to you to determine in what year that particular news item hit the pages of the paper:
• A SUBWAY FAST-FOOD FRANCHISE IS COMING TO TRACY, IT WAS ANNOUNCED IN JANUARY OF THIS YEAR.
Tom and Sue Morin, owners of the Mediterranean Club, have purchased a Subway franchise. They plan to remodel a portion of the Mediterranean restaurant to accomodate the new fastfood eatery.
“We hope to start remodeling by the end of February and be open sometime in April,” Tom Morin explains.
The Mediterranean will continue to operate its full-service restaurant, ballroom, game room, video rental store and catering service.
The Subway restaurant will be located in the southwest corner of the Mediterranean building, space now used for an office and a video rental business.
Med Video would be moved to an 18x24 foot addition proposed for the southwest comer of the building. The addition will require moving two freezers to another location on the south side of the building. The Mediterranean is located on the west edge of Tracy, in a pie-shaped parcel at Morgan Street and Hwy. 14.
The proposed Subway restaurant will have indoor seating for 20 people, and employ 3-4 people part-time or two people fulltime.
Hours will be from 10 am. to 11 p.m., seven days a week.
“We will have the same basic menu of all Subways. We’ll have the four-inch round, six-inch and 12-inch sandwiches with all the fixings,” Morin explains. Subway also serves soft drinks and chips. Morin points out that the Subway will work in relatively little space at the Med because existing kitchen, rest room and refrigeration facilities can be utilized.
Seating on the west side of the Mediterranean can be utilized for the Mediterranean’s video rental overflow from Subway.
